REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson University junior goalie Ryan Kenny stopped all 34 shots he faced for a shutout in the Mustangs' 4-0 victory over Tufts University on Saturday.
A penalty-filled affair saw 16 total infractions whistled, with nine by the hosts totaling 34 minutes and seven for Tufts adding up to 25 minutes. The Mustangs capitalized on two of their four power play attempts while Tufts went 0 for 6 on the man-advantage.
Stevenson would get started with a power play goal from Alex Rivet at 5:34 of the first period. The action was heavy in the first period, with both teams taking 15 shots. Kenny made 15 saves for the Mustangs and Josh Sarlo had 14 stops for the Jumbos.
The hosts would add another power play strike just 1:12 into the second period as Ryan Patrick scored making it a 2-0 game. The Jumbos would be unable to capitalize on three man-advantage opportunities in the middle stanza, with Kenny making 11 more saves in the frame overall. Stevenson added a short-handed goal too, with Patrick scoring again at 7:03 of the second for a 3-0 Mustang advantage. Brendan Rylott then added what would be the game's final goal at 13:38 of the middle frame making it 4-0.
Eight penalties were called in a scoreless third period, including 10-minute misconducts on both teams with 2:45 remaining in regulation. The Jumbos killed an early five-minute advantage for Stevenson. Kenny finished off his shutout with eight saves for the hosts in the final frame.
Tufts had a slim advantage on face-offs with Angus Scott's 15 victories leading the way. Four shots apiece by Tom Tresca, Rune Kirby and Mason Kohn led the Jumbos on offense. Sarlo totaled 32 saves for the Jumbos.
Stevenson won shots 36-34.
The Jumbos will return home from the Baltimore area and then return to NESCAC action next Friday night at Middlebury College.
