MEDFORD – Visiting Nichols College overcame Tufts late in the game to take a 90-85 non-conference men's basketball victory against the Jumbos on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gymnasium.
Jaekwon Spencer and Jakigh Dottin both scored 12 points in the second half when the Bison erased an 11-point deficit to win. Dottin finished with 20 and Spencer had 18 as Nichols improved to 9-1.
Tufts was led by a game-high 22 points from Tyler Aronson, the second-highest scoring total of his Jumbo career.
The Jumbos led 74-63 when Aronson hit a three-pointer with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. However, Nichols would score 11 of the game's next 12 points to pull within 75-74 on a Dottin lay-up at 6:30. Five Bison scored during the stretch.
Tufts kept the lead for a bit with an and-one by Bobby Stewart putting the hosts up 80-75. However, the visitors would take their first lead since the mid-way point of the first half when Jason O'Regan sank a three for an 83-81 Bison advantage with 3:47 on the second-half clock. A Dottin lay-up then made it 85-81. Baskets by Dylan Thoerner and Trumann Gettings (pictured) had Tufts within 87-85 in the final 30 seconds, but Nichols was able to secure the win with free throws.
In the first half, Aronson scored 13 and Thoerner had 10 for the Jumbos as they took a 45-39 lead after 20 minutes. Matt Morrow had 10 at the break to lead Nichols. The Jumbos would build on that advantage early in the second half, but the Bison came back impressively to spoil Tufts' last game of the fall semester.
Thoerner added 15 points and three assists for Tufts, while Gettings finished with 10 points and six rebounds and Stewart added 12 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Stewart was five for five from the field and is shooting .667 from the floor overall (32/48).
The Bison had six score in double-digits, including 17 from Morrow and 12 with five rebounds and four assists by Tahmeen Dupree. They had five players with five or more rebounds as well (O'Regan led with eight). The visitors shot 32 for 59 from the field (54.2 percent).
Tufts travels to Nashville for the Music City Classic on December 29-30.
