WILLIAMSTOWN - Williams College's Jacob Monroe scored with 3:26 left in the third period to give the host Ephs a 5-4 victory over Tufts University in a NESCAC men's hockey game on Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos had trailed 3-0 in the second period, but rallied to take a 4-3 lead on goals by Sam Miller (pictured), Cam Newton, Angus Scott and Tyler Sedlak. However, the host Ephs scored twice in a three-minute span late in the third to win it.
Tufts began its comeback during a five-on-three advantage when sophomore defenseman Sam Miller snuck a one-timer from the right face-off dot through the pads of Williams goalie Cosimo Lazzarino at 13:27 of the second period. Soon after, Jumbo Fisher Shea came out of the penalty box and forced an Eph turnover in the Williams zone. That set up a two-on-one for Tufts' Marek Pechr and Cam Newton, with Newton collecting the puck and flipping a shot into the right side of the net making it a 3-2 game with 4:15 on the second-period clock.
A power play goal by Scott tied the score at 3-3 at the 4:30 mark of the third period. Tom Tresca got the rebound of a shot by Miller and sent the puck behind the net to Justin Brandt, who moved out front and passed to Scott at the left post for a game-tying goal. Tufts then scored its fourth consecutive goal of the game with a three-on-two where Brandt in the middle passed to freshman Tyler Sedlak on the left and he scored at 13:03 for a 4-3 Jumbo lead.
Williams had taken a 1-0 advantage in the first period when Nick Altmann scored from Sean Clarke four minutes into the frame. The Ephs then scored goals 1:37 part - by Niko Karamanis and Clarke - for a 3-0 advantage early in the second period.
After Tufts rallied to take the lead, Eph Mark Pelletier scored a wrap-around goal at 13:35 of the third to tie the score at 4-4. Then at 16:34 of the period, Monroe tallied the game-winner after Henry Muller intercepted a Tufts clear at the red line, carried into the Jumbo end and fed Monroe in front for the decisive goal.
The Jumbos put two shots on Lazzarino late in the third, including while goalie Josh Sarlo was off the ice, but the Ephs held on for the win.
The game featured 75 shots on goal, with 45 for the Ephs and 30 for the Jumbos. Lazzarino finished with 26 saves for the hosts while Sarlo made 40 in the Jumbo net.
Tufts will return to Valley Forum next weekend for NESCAC games against Colby and Bowdoin.
