Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore catcher Clay Sowell hit two home runs with seven rbis in the second game to help the Tufts University baseball team earn a double-header split at Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon.
Sowell led the Jumbos (11-6) to a 16-6 win in the nightcap. In the opener, the host Wildcats (13-14) erased a 5-0 deficit and walked off with a 6-5 victory in a seven-inning game.
Today's games featured Tufts veteran head coach John Casey going against his second oldest son Kevin Casey, head coach of the Wildcats.
Batting clean-up, Sowell's grand slam was the signature piece of an eight-run first inning by the Jumbos to start game two. Sophomore LF Connor Flavin also hit a two-run triple in the inning, while freshman SS Ozzie Fleischer singled home a run and junior CF Miles Reid hit a run-scoring double.
In the Tufts third, Peter DeMaria hit a two-out, three-run home run giving the Jumbos an 11-0 advantage. Sowell would then launch a three-run shot in the fifth as Tufts went up 14-3. Jimmy Evans had an rbi single in the sixth and Justin Perrotta added one in the seventh to finish the Jumbo scoring.
Johnson & Wales scored their runs in the third and fifth innings with three apiece. Joe Maracic and Kevin Duffy both doubled home runs as part of the third. Bryan Bessler and Patrick Fleming had rbi singles in the fifth.
The Jumbos finished with 16 hits in game two. Reid went 3 for 4 with three runs and an rbi and DeMaria was 2 for 3 with three runs and three rbis. Evans, Sowell, Ryan Noone and Patrick Solomon also had two hits each. One of four Tufts pitchers, Lucas Gustavson threw three innings of relief allowing no hits and no runs while striking out five. Steven Landry struck out the side in the ninth.
Duffy had two hits for JWU in the nightcap. Kyle Cutler started and took the pitching loss.
Tufts had built a 5-0 lead in game one. DeMaria hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for a quick Jumbo lead. Nate Bozzella walked with one out in the second and scored on a single by Will Burgess. Connor Bowman then hit a two-run single in the fourth, scoring both Brandon Bay and Jackson Duffy who had base hits.
Tufts starter Brad Marchetti went four innings allowing just two hits and no runs. However, the Wildcats started their comeback in the fifth against reliever Silas Reed. They scored three times including a two-run double by Colby Greenhalgh. JWU pulled within 5-4 in the sixth when Maracic walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Fleming.
The Wildcats walked off in the seventh as Greenhalgh homered against Tufts reliever Spencer Langdon to tie the score at 5-5. A double by Raimiel Rodriguez followed, and he scored on a base hit by Duffy to end it.
Greenhalgh finished 3 for 4 with three rbis and two runs scored in the opener. Rodriguez and Armani Henderson both had two hits for the Wildcats. Reliever Dane DellaValle, who threw three no-hit, no-run innings, picked up the victory.
