MEDFORD - Freshman Luke Botsford of the Tufts University men's track & field team put himself in position to earn an NCAA berth in the 400 meters at the Tufts National Qualifying Meet at Ellis Oval / Dussault Track on Thursday.
Botsford ran a time of 48.14 seconds to win the six-man 400 meters race today, improving his national ranking to 13th in the event as of Thursday evening at 8:30 pm. He improved upon his previous season-best of 48.85 that was 46th in DIII. The top 17 who declare for the NCAA event are expected to get in.
In the 200 today Botsford also recorded a season-best of 21.73 seconds which is ranked 31st nationally. That was a jump of seven sports from his 21.79 mark that was 38th.
Senior Aiden Lewis ran a national top-50 mark and PR in the 800 meters with a 1:53.20 time. That was a Tufts season-best, as was the PR 10.83 seconds that sophomore Alex Lemieux put down in the 100 meters preliminaries.
Senior Peter Horvath ran a season-best 9:35.82 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase today. Sophomore Amos Trinidad went 22'5 ¼" (6.84m) in the long jump for a Tufts 2021-best effort.
The field for the NCAA Championship should be announced by Friday night at 8 pm.
