MEDFORD – Kyle Cortese and Clay Sowell hit home runs to help power the Tufts University baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Wheaton College in non-league action at Huskins Field on Sunday.
Tufts finishes its regular season at 12-6 and awaits the NCAA Tournament announcement tonight. Wheaton (16-4), the NEWMAC champions, will also be in the NCAA field.
The Jumbos scored five times in the first inning today with Cortese's three-run home run - his fourth of the year - capping the frame. Earlier in the inning Jimmy Evans had doubled home a run and scored and Jackson Duff hit an rbi single and scored.
Tufts used eight pitchers in the game, with Brad Marchetti starting and getting the win by scorer's decision. He allowed one hit and no runs with a walk in two innings and won for the first time since 2017 as he has battled injuries. Cameron Mayer pitched a scoreless third for the Jumbos.
The visiting Lyons got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Senior Mark D'Augelli led off with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. He scored on a ground out by Patrick Santorella.
Sowell pushed the Tufts advantage to 7-1 in the fifth with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run job to left scoring Peter DeMaria who had walked.
Wheaton scored four times in the seventh cutting the margin to 7-5. AJ Guindon, Zack DeMattio and Andrew Spirito all had rbi singles.
The Lyons would then end up getting the tying run to third base in the top of the ninth. After DeMattio led off with a walk, D'Augelli singled through the left side. They were sacrificed to second and third, then a failed pick-off attempt at second scored DeMattio to pull Wheaton within 7-6. Jumbo freshman reliever Silas Reed would get a strikeout to secure the victory and earn a save.
Steven Landry and Jack Schwartz also pitched scoreless innings for Tufts, with neither allowing a hit. Duffy finished 2 for 3 with a run and an rbi and DeMaria scored twice.
Starter John Mikosz started and took the loss for Wheaton, allowing five hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings. The Lyon bullpen of Zach Nichols, Zach Begin, Dominic Cunha and Josh Roberge did not allow a run and gave up just two hits in 3.2 innings. Guindon and Stephen Quigley had two hits apiece for the visitors.
