MEDFORD – Beth Krikorian (pictured) scored three goals as third-ranked Tufts upended Endicott College 6-1 in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Ounjian Field.
The hat trick was the second of Krikorian's career and helped Tufts improve to 3-0 overall. Endicott, who scored the first goal against Tufts this season, dropped to 2-3.
The Jumbos led 2-0 five minutes into the game. Krikorian scored her first 2:40 in when she slammed home the round of a shot by Jumbo Sophie Schoeni that was blocked by the Gulls defense. Gillian Roeca pushed the lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later when she beat an Endicott defender inside the top right of the circle and fired one in far side.
Endicott starting goalie Taylor Farrin kept it a two-goal game later in the quarter when she smothered a great chance by Tufts' Melissa Manzello at the left post on a corner opportunity. The Jumbos finished the first 15 minutes with five shots and three corners.
Gull senior Abby Carter played excellent defensively, breaking up a few Jumbo rushes and recording a defensive save in the second period. However, shortly after that play Krikorian scored her second goal with an assist from Reegan McClusey and the hosts led 3-0 at halftime.
The Jumbos would earn nine penalty corners in the third quarter, but could not capitalize on any of them. Krikorian also had a penalty stroke in the third, but missed the shot. Tufts was finally able to add their fourth goal of the game with 1:34 to go in the quarter as junior Schuyler Edie scored on the second rebound after shots by Kylie Rosenquest and Roeca.
Tufts would earn a second stroke early in the fourth and McCluskey converted to give the hosts a 5-0 margin. Krikorian finished off her hat trick by maneuvering in the top right of the circle to set up a shot and scoring with 8:21 on the fourth quarter clock.
Endicott would break up the shutout late as junior Meaghan Hogan sent a long ball right into the middle of the circle and Olivia Lampasona had burst past the Tufts defense and tipped it in.
Shots finished 29-4 for Tufts, and they earned a huge advantage in corners as well at 16-0. Both teams used multiple goalies, with Andie Stallman playing the first half and making a save while earning the victory for Tufts. Allison Wales made 10 saves in relief of Farrin (for saves) for the Gulls.
