BEVERLY - Six different players scored goals as 12th-ranked Endicott College took a 6-1 victory over Tufts University in non-conference men's hockey action late Tuesday afternoon.
The Jumbos were within 2-1 when leading scorer Justin Brandt scored his fifth goal of the season early in the second period. However, Endicott's Zach Mazur tallied late in the second to give the Gulls their two-goal lead back. Then late in the third, with Endicott leading 4-1, the Jumbos pulled their goalie and the hosts tacked on two goals.
The game, Tufts' first since December 11, was filled with activity. The teams combined for 88 shots, including 40 by the Jumbos. Sixteen penalties were whistled, though neither team took great advantage on the power play. Tufts was 0 for 6 and Endicott finished 1 for 5 with the man-advantage.
Both goalies were busy, as Tufts sophomore Peyton Durand recorded 42 saves and Endicott senior Conor O'Brien stopped 40 shots for the Gulls.
Tufts out-shot Endicott 13-10 in the first period, but O'Brien stopped each of the Jumbo attempts. Connor Beatty and Eric Johansson scored goals as the hosts took a 2-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Jacob Iida (pictured) set up Brandt's goal for Tufts at the 3:44 mark of the second period to make it a one-goal game. Durand made 17 saves in the frame to help the Jumbo cause, but Mazur scored with 2:48 remaining in the middle standza to put Endicott up 3-1.
The Gulls' Drew Lorinchak then scored the game's only power play goal 4:15 into the third period and it put the hosts up 4-1. The empty-net scores for Endicott were netted by Connor Amsley and Ryan Bell, and both came short-handed.
Angus Scott won 15 of 26 face-offs in the game for Tufts, while Iida recorded a game-high seven shots and was even in the plus-minus category. Lorinchak with a goal and an assist, and Cam Speck with two assists were multi-point scorers for Endicott.
The Jumbos return to NESCAC action at Hamilton College on Friday night at 7 pm.
