Men's Basketball Earns Conference Victory at Amherst 74-66

Box Score

AMHERST – After being tied at halftime, the Tufts University men's basketball team outscored the Amherst College Mammoths in the second half for the 74-66 victory on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Four of the five Tufts starters finished the game with double-digit points as graduate student Brennan Morris (pictured) led the way with 14 points. Theo Henry and Will Brady both finished with 11 points and Henry grabbed nine rebounds as well. Senior Luke Rogers scored 10 points with five rebounds. Amherst's Garrett Day led the Mammoths in scoring, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Amherst started fast, scoring six consecutive points on two jump shots from Grant Robinson and a Will Scherer layup. The Jumbos answered right back, scoring six consecutive points of their own on a Rogers jumper, a Morris three-pointer, and a Henry free throw. This is when Amherst went on a 15-3 run to take a 12-point lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the half. Tufts slowly began to fight back and responded to this run with a 24-12 run to end the first half tied at 33. Morris did not miss a shot in the first half, going four for four from beyond the arc for 12 first-half points.

The second half started off with both teams trading baskets and continuing to play an evenly matched game. After 11 minutes of play in the second half, the game was tied at 50 and neither team was giving the other any chance of a run. They continued to trade baskets and with just over three and a half minutes left, the game was once again tied at 61. Will Brady hit a three-pointer for the Jumbos to give them a three-point lead, but Day made three free throws to tie the game again. For the remainder of the game, it was all Jumbos, as they scored eight straight points on a Dylan Thoerner jumper and free throws from Trumann Gettings, Morris, and Henry to end the game with a score of 74-66 in favor of Tufts.

The win gives the Jumbos a 5-8 record on the year and their first NESCAC victory, while Amherst falls to 10-4 overall with a 2-2 conference record.

The Jumbos return to action on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 and will host New England College at 5 pm at Cousens Gymnasium.
