AMHERST - Host Amherst College's Matteo Mangiardi scored with 1:49 remaining in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and the Mammoths added an empty-net goal for a 5-3 victory against Tufts in a NESCAC men's hockey game Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos had tied the score at 3-3 with eight minutes remaining in the second period when Andrew Maynard forced a turnover by the Mammoths in their own end. Jacob Iida picked up the loose puck for Tufts and snuck it past Amherst goalie Connor Lesley to tie the game.
An evenly-played third period was winding down below two minutes left in regulation when Mangiardi scored off assists from Connor Merrill and Tyler Bourque to give Amherst a 4-3 lead. Sean Wrenn added the empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining for the 5-3 final.
Tufts had jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Early in the first period, Maynard collected the puck in the Amherst end on the outside edge of the left face-off circle. He moved untouched into the slot and his shot beat Lesley at 5:18 for a 1-0 Jumbo lead. The goal was the first of Maynard's collegiate career, and Clark Bolin and Aidan Lovett earned assists.
Less than two minutes later, Tufts extended their lead to 2-0 on the powerplay. While executing in the Amherst end, Cam Newton at the far left point fired a pass across the zone to Harrison Bazianos in the right circle. His one-timer went in at 7:05 of the first.
Amherst, who had three power-play goals in the game, would tie the score with a pair of man-advantage goals in the final four minutes of the first period. Matt Toporowski was set up for a high-percentage shot from the right circle by Ben Kuzma and scored at 15:53. Joey Verkerke then came down the slot to accept a ass from Toporowski and score at 19:04 tying the game.
Kuzma gave Amherst its third straight goal on a power play just 1:19 into the second period for a 3-2 Mammoths lead. Tufts would answer, but the hosts were able to take the victory at the end.
Freshman Spencer Rose made his first collegiate start in goal for Tufts and was solid with 24 saves including 13 in the second period. Angus Scott won 11 face-offs for the Jumbos.
Leslie finished with 21 saves for Amherst (5-6-1, 4-4-1 NESCAC), who were led by Toporowski's goal and two assists. Verkerke finished with a goal and an assist.
