Hockey Sweeps Season Series Over Middlebury With 4-0 Win

Box Score

MALDEN - Senior goalie Josh Sarlo made 33 saves and sophomore Fisher Shea (pictured) scored a goal with two assists as the Tufts men's hockey team shut out Middlebury College 4-0 in a NESCAC game at Malden Valley Forum on Friday night.

With the victory, Tufts sweeps the season series against the Panthers including a 3-2 win in Vermont back in December.

The shutout was the first of the season for Sarlo and second of his career. He was sharp from the outset as Middlebury's Sam Amato sent Cole Joslin in alone on Sarlo six minutes into the game, but the Jumbo goalie made the save.

Two minutes later, Tufts took a 1-0 lead after Justin Brandt feathered a pass to Shea who was charging into the Middlebury zone. Shea picked the far top corner from the left face-off circle at 7:38 of the first for his first collegiate goal. That was the only goal of a penalty-free first period which saw eight shots by each team.

Neither squad could take advantage of power play opportunities early in the second period. Later on, Middlebury's Antoine Belisle hit the post and had a shot smothered by Sarlo after he got the puck alone in front and tried a move the to right side of the goal. Sarlo made 15 saves in the second period.

Brandt would finesse another pass to set up Tufts' second goal. He took the puck at the Panther goal line in the left end and moved out to the blue line. He then back-handed a pass to Jacob Iida in the right face-off circle and he snapped one past Middlebury goalie Jake Horoho at 14:08 of the second.

The Jumbos scored a fluky goal three minutes into the third period to go up 3-0. With both teams in a change, Jack Hughes sent a puck from the red line into the Panther zone off the left boards, but it took an odd bounce and fooled Horoho for Hughes' first college goal.

Tufts put a bow on the win with a power play goal at 10:51 of the third. Tyler Sedlak (four points in last three games) moved into the circle from the right point and laid into a pass from Angus Scott (two assists) for a 4-0 Jumbo lead.

The Panthers outshot Tufts 33-30 and earned a slim 35-34 edge on face-offs. Jin Lee won 13 of 19 draws for the visitors. Middlebury was 0 for 3 on the power play.

Tufts, which went 1 for 3 on the man-advantage, was led by a 12-20 performance at the face-off dot by Mason Kohn.

The Jumbos have won two out of three in the league, including 3-2 in overtime at Wesleyan last Friday which gave them the season series (1-0-1) against the Cardinals as well.
