MEDFORD - Four Jumbos scored in double-digits as the eighth-ranked and NESCAC-leading Tufts University women's basketball team defeated Colby College in conference action this afternoon 89-75.
It's the highest scoring total of the season for Tufts, who received 18 points from Annika Decker (pictured), 16 by Erin Poindexter McHan, 15 from Callie O'Brien and 14 by Maggie Russell. The Jumbos were on fire from distance, hitting 12 of 18 threes (66.7 percent) and 50 percent of their shots overall (31/62).
Head coach Jill Pace's Jumbos improved to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the league. The team celebrated Senior Day this afternoon, with Angela Alibrandi, Poindexter McHan, Sofia Rosa and Molly Ryan honored in a pre-game ceremony.
Colby dropped to 9-6 overall and 1-5 in NESCAC. They were led by a game-high 25 points off the bench by Caroline Smith.
Tufts took a 21-12 lead in the first quarter and led the rest of the way. Nine points from Decker and five by O'Brien paced the Jumbos over the first 10 minutes when they made three out of four three-pointers and eight of 15 total field goals (53.3 percent).
The game had been tied 8-8 early and Tufts' lead was just 11-10 with four minutes remaining in the first. However, the Jumbos outscored the Mules 10-2 over the remainder of the quarter including eight straight points by four different players. Decker had four in the quarter-closing run overall.
Colby closed the gap to five points at 32-27 on a three-pointer by Keagan Dunbar with 1:27 remaining in the half. However, threes by Poindexter McHan and Ayah Harper gave the hosts a 38-27 lead at the break.
The Jumbos then made five out of seven three-pointers in a high-scoring third quarter, two by Decker, to build a 66-49 lead. Colby would get the margin down to nine (79-70) in the fourth on a basket by Smith with two minutes to go, but the Jumbos sealed the win at the line.
Decker added five assists to her performance while making six of eight shots including four for five on threes. O'Brien had eight rebounds along with five assists, while Russell double-doubled again with 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Chiamaka Ubani finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Mules. Carly Christofori added 13 points and six rebounds.
Tufts gets right back at it tomorrow night against a 15-1 Smith College team at Cousens.
