MALDEN - Visiting Williams College scored twice on the powerplay and earned a 3-1 NESCAC victory at Tufts University on Monday evening at Valley Forum.
Tufts' Tom Tresca scored on a powerplay to pull the Jumbos within 3-1 at 14:26 of the third period. Tufts pulled goalie Ryan Welch with four minutes left in regulation and maintained strong possession in the Williams end, but could not score. Eph goalie Cosimo Lazzarino made 26 saves in the victory.
The Ephs had an early five-on-three advantage for nearly a minute, but could not score. However, they would get on the scoreboard first on another man-advantage later in the period. Jarin Sutton took a pass at the left point and skated slowly into the slot until he was able to snap a shot through a crowd to score at 16:34 of the first.
On Tufts' first powerplay of the game early in the second period, Brenda Skarda went end-to-end through the Ephs for a shot that Lazzarino saved as the penalty was expiring. The Jumbos got another powerplay three minutes later, but it would be negated by a five-minute major of their own.
Once Williams went on the power play due to the major, Welch made a nice save on an attempt by Owen Stadheim from right in front. Ben Lawrick would score on a one-timer from inside the right point at 10:56 though and the Eph lead was 2-0. Welch kept the deficit at two though when he stoned Tyler Cooligan on a break-away with 6:35 on the second-period clock.
The Ephs would go ahead 3-0 at the 6:33 mark of the third period when Cooligan cleaned up the rebound of a shot by Connor Kucharski.
Tufts broke up the shutout with Tresca's goal on the power play. Tyler Sedlak at the right point fired a pass diagonal across the zone to Tresca low in the left circle and he swatted it in for his third goal of the season.
With Welch out of the Jumbo net, Lazzarino made three saves and Ephs blocked a pair of shots to close out the victory.
Welch finished with 23 stops in goal as Tufts earned a slim 27-26 advantage in shots. The Jumbos won 38 of 65 face-offs, including a 17 for 23 night by Mason Kohn (pictured).
