CLINTON, N.Y. - The host Hamilton College Continentals scored five times in the second period on their way to a 6-1 victory in NESCAC men's hockey action against Tufts University on Sunday afternoon.
Tufts enters the final weekend of the regular-season at 5-9-2 in NESCAC for eighth place. The Jumbos play at Colby and Bowdoin next Friday and Saturday, respectively. Tufts can finish as high as seventh.
Due to COVID-19 protocols creating challenges for NESCAC teams to reschedule games this winter and the potential for a disparity in the number of regular-season conference games played, the NESCAC membership agreed to modify the ice hockey championships for the 2021-22 season to include all 10 teams. Two play-in games between the seventh through 10th seeds will be held on February 25.
Tufts and Hamilton played a scoreless first period that saw the host Continentals out-shoot Tufts 9-5. The Continentals then sent a barrage of shots (28) at Tufts goalie Peyton Durand in the second period, scoring five times. The goals were netted by Fred Allaire, Jordi Jefferson, Max Wutzke, Sean McAvoy and Jeremy Smith on a power play.
The Jumbos would get their only goal of the game 15 minutes into the third period when Angus Scott (pictured) netted his team-high eighth goal of the year. Assists went to Justin Brandt and Aiden Lovett.
Hamilton added a goal by Ryan Brown at 16:57 for the 6-1 final. The Continentals (10-8, 9-7 NESCAC) capped off an eight-point weekend when they had one OT win and two regulation wins to move into fourth place in the league.
Durand finished with 39 saves for the Jumbos, while Charlie Archer recorded 25 stops in goal for the hosts. These teams had met on Friday night at Tufts with the Continentals taking a 4-3 win in overtime.
