MALDEN - The first career goals by Mason Kohn and Brennan Horn (pictured) helped the Tufts University hockey team take a 3-2 win over Connecticut College at Valley Forum on Friday night.
The Jumbos, backed by 27 saves in net by current NESCAC Player of the Week Josh Sarlo, improved to 4-7-1 in the league to tie with the Camels in the conference standings. The teams meet again tomorrow night at 7 in their annual home-and-home series.
Kohn and Angus Scott scored goals early in the first and second periods to give Tufts an advantage. On Kohn's goal 1:34 into the first, he was in the slot to deftly deflect in a shot from the left point by Jack Hughes. Tyler Sedlak also had an assist. Later in the period, Sarlo was quick to stop a shot by Camel Peter Scheschareg who intercepted the puck right in front of the net.
The second period saw much more action than the first. Just 1:18 into the frame, Tufts' Justin Brandt chased down a dump-in by Tom Tresca and waited patiently behind the net until Scott opened up in front. Brandt put the puck on Scott's stick and the senior assistant captain scored his sixth of the season.
The Jumbos went up 3-0 on a power play when Harrison Bazianos and Cam Newton circled the puck around to Horn at the left point. The freshman skated in towards the outer edge of the face-off circle and snapped one past Camel starting goalie Cam Fernandez at 12:01 of the second.
The visitors made a goalie change at that point, bringing on Mike McHale. The momentum would swing a bit from there, as Connecticut College scored a short-handed goal to pull within 3-1. Kei Yusuda caused a turnover while Tufts was in the Camel zone and the puck went to Kyle Shero. He sent a pass back to Yashuda breaking in to the Jumbo zone with Sedlak in hot pursuit. Yashuda crashed the net and scored with 10:11 on the second-period clock.
Brandt missed high right on a break-in, and Camel John Russo hit the post before an exciting middle stanza came to a close with Tufts up 3-1.
Connecticut College then scored four minutes into the third, with Eric Fournier turning and firing from the left point as the puck snuck past Sarlo to pull the visitors within 3-2. However, the Jumbos would hold off the Camels, including killing a power play 14 minutes into the frame and shutting down Conn after they pulled the goalie with 1:36 left.
The Camels finished with a slim 29-27 edge in shots. McHale stopped all nine shots he faced after Fernandez made 15 saves in 28 minutes of action.
The Jumbos held the Camels to 0 for 5 on the power play while converting one of three themselves.
