BOSTON – The Tufts University men's swimming & diving team competed in the Boston Winter Open on Friday night at Boston University. The two-day event serves as a shave and taper meet for non-conference swimmers and divers.
Joining the Jumbos and BU Terriers were representatives from Bates, Boston College, Brown, Holy Cross, MIT and Northeastern.
Two Tufts swimmers had third-place finishes on Friday night. Junior James Kim competed in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:41.97, and sophomore Edwin Liang-Gilman (pictured) in 200-yard individual medley had a time of 1:53.83, finishing just 0.59 seconds behind the second-place finisher. In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Will Stearns finished in fifth place out of 33 racers with a strong time of 21.15 seconds. The Jumbos also swam in the 400 freestyle relay, with Vedant Bapna, Alex Gu, Sean Carr and Liang-Gilman combining on a 3:09.25 that was fifth at the meet.
Sophomore Ethan Cobos finished in third place in the three-meter diving event with a score of 290.40.
In the time trials, highlighting Tufts' swimers was Julian Chun who finished with a time of 57.49 in the 100 breaststroke, and a 2:07.40 by Bora Calis in the 200 breaststroke.
The Jumbos will continue to compete in the Boston Winter Open on Saturday, with two sessons at 10 am and 6 pm.
