Baseball Starts Spring Trip With 9-0 Win Against Apprentice

Box Score

HAMPTON,Va. - Junior right-hander Cameron Mayer went eight innings allowing just five hits and no runs with 10 strikeouts and no walks to lead the Tufts University baseball team to a 9-0 victory over Apprentice School on Friday afternoon. The game was the first of Tufts' spring trip, in which they'll play nine games over the next 10 days.

Making his season debut, Mayer breezed through the first six innings. He ran into some difficulties in the seventh, but worked out of it.

The Jumbo bats steadily built their lead throughout the game. Tufts scored twice in the first, on a sac fly from Peter DeMaria and a base hit up the middle by John Fritz.

Apprentice starter Andrew Castine then allowed three more Tufts runs in the third inning. The Jumbos added one on a sac fly from Fritz and two more on a base hit by catcher Connor Bowman for a 5-0 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth Mayer allowed his first hit of the day, but stranded the runner on first.

Jimmy Evans brought in another Tufts run on a sac fly in the sixth scoring Patrick Solomon (pictured) giving the Jumbos a lead of 6-0. Tufts padded on another run with a hard-hit ground ball from DeMaria to lead 7-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, where Mayer finished his strong outing.

Tufts closed its scoring with a two-out, two-run double by Ozzie Fleischer to extend the lead to 9-0 in the top of the ninth. Junior Jack Schwartz entered for Mayer in the bottom of the inning and closed the door on the shutout for the Jumbos.

Bowman had two hits and two rbis for the Jumbos, while Miles Reid finished 3 for 4 with a run. Solomon scored three times. Maxwell Burcham finished with two hits for the Builders.

The Jumbos are off to a 4-0 start under first-year head coach Paul Svagdis. The win today stops a seven-game winning streak by the Builders (9-12).

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Historic War Memorial Stadium with a 1 pm start.
