HAMPTON, Va. - The Tufts University baseball team finished off a two-game set against the Apprentice School on Saturday with a 7-2 victory over the Builders. The Jumbos won the first game between the teams on Friday 9-0. Tufts improved to 5-0 overall.
The Jumbos got right to it in the top of the first, scoring twice. Miles Reid brought in the first run of the day after back-to-back doubles by Ozzie Fleischer and Jimmy Evans, then Peter DeMaria knocked in the second run on a ground ball to short. Junior Connor Kinney got the start and stranded an Apprentice runner at second base in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the third, the Jumbos pushed three runs across. Tufts senior co-captain Ryan Noone drove in a run with a bases-loaded single putting Tufts up 3-0. Then Connor Podeszwa plated his first career rbi with a sac fly to give Tufts a 4-0 margin. Clay Sowell (pictured) scored on a wild pitch and it was 5-0.
Kinney was able to battle out of trouble in the second through fourth innings to keep Apprentice scoreless and the Jumbos led 5-0 after four.
In the top of the fifth Sowell added another a home run - his second of the season - to left-center and the Jumbos led 6-0.
Kinney exited after four innings pitched, allowing six hits and no earned runs. Junior Gavin Brown entered in the bottom of the fifth and surrendered two runs by Apprentice lowering Tufts' lead to 6-2. That's how it stayed into the seventh, following a laser line drive caught by Podeszwa and thrown across the diamond for 5-3 double play in the bottom of the sixth.
Brown stranded a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh and Tufts' lead stayed at 6-2. Podeszwa then scored Sowell after two hit-by-pitches. The Jumbos stranded a pair in scoring position, but tacked on the one run on the Podeszwa rbi base hit to lead 7-2.
Podeszwa turned another double play in the last of the eighth, this time a 5-5-3 play on a ground ball induced by Brown, who would finish off the game for a five-inning save.
Tufts is off on Sunday and will play at Guilford on Monday at 3 pm.
