Baseball Explodes for 24 Hits in 22-5 Defeat of Guilford on Monday

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Tufts University baseball team scored 22 runs on 24 hits on their way to a 22-5 victory at Guilford College on Monday afternoon, improving to 6-0 on the season.

The Jumbos had nine players with multiple hits in the ball game. Sophomore Patrick Solomon finished 2 for 5 with three runs scored and three rbis and graduate student Kyle Cortese went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs. Freshman Henry Fleckner and sophomores Johnny Briody and John Fritz each had three hits in the game. Fleckner and Briody added three runs scored each while Fritz crossed the plate twice. Fleckner and Briody both had an rbi as well.

Tufts got on the scoreboard first, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Ozzie Fleischer led off the game with a single through the right side of the infield and would score on a Miles Reid double. Cortese followed that up with a single to score Reid and a Solomon drove in Clay Sowell who walked in the previous at-bat. Tufts capped off their five-run half inning with an rbi single by Connor Bowman.

After Guilford (3-11) scored one run in the second on a Chase Wade rbi single, the Jumbos scored six runs in the third and fourth innings combined. Peter DeMaria doubled and scored on a passed ball in the third and Bowman adding another rbi single to drive in Solomon after he walked. Guilford added their second run of the day in the bottom half of the third as Bryce Verstal scored on a Tufts balk after doubling. Jimmy Evans (pictured) led off the fourth inning with a solo home run and Cortese smashed a two-run home run over the right field fence. The Jumbos added another run in the inning when Reid was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Guilford error to make it 11-2.

A one-out walk from Sowell started a nine-run sixth inning for the 'Bos, highlighted by rbi singles from Evans, Connor Flavin and Justin Perrotta. Tufts did a great job of getting the ball in play and forcing defensive mistakes, as they scored four runs on errors and one on a wild pitch to make it 20-2. Three Guilford players crossed the plate in the bottom half, as Phillips hit an rbi double, eventually scoring on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a Clay Dilday sacrifice fly to center field.

Tufts tacked on their final two runs in the seventh inning on a Ben Leonard rbi single through the right side of the infield and a hard rbi single down the line for Connor Davidson. A combination of Jumbos pitchers Matt Benda and Matt Donato finished the game with three shutout innings, with Benda throwing two and allowing just two hits while Donato threw a no-run and hitless ninth inning to end the game at 22-5.

Senior pitcher Brendan McFall started on the mound and got the win, throwing five innings and giving up two runs and five hits while striking out nine batters. Guilford starting pitcher Griffin Icenhower threw five innings as well, giving up 11 hits and nine earned runs while striking out five batters in the loss. Jacob Phillips led the way for Guilford going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Jumbos will continue their spring trip on Tuesday when they face off against Averett University in Danville, Virginia at 3 pm.
