Baseball Finishes Trip 11-1 After 13-8 Win at Randolph-Macon

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. - The Tufts University baseball team finished its spring trip with an 11-1 record after winning 13-8 at Randolph-Macon College on Sunday afternoon. Today's win made amends for the Jumbos' only loss on the trip, 10-6 to the Yellow Jackets yesterday.

Jumbo senior Miles Reid (pictured) went 4 for 6 with two doubles, four runs batted in and two runs scored today. Tufts had 18 hits overall, with senior DH Ryan Noone going 4 for 5 with two rbis and two runs and sophomore SS Ozzie Fleischer finishing 3 for 4 with three runs. Jimmy Evans (2 for 4, 3 runs, 2 rbis) and Patrick Solomon (2 for 4, run) were also key contributors.

After going ahead 1-0 in the first on a Reid single, an Evans double and a sacrifice fly by senior Peter DeMaria, Tufts added four more in the third to lead 5-0. Reid had a two-run single, and Noone doubled home a run and scored on a wild pitch. Randolph-Macon scored their first run in the third off Tufts starter Connor Podeszwa on walk by Spencer Pietruszynski, a single from Carter Johnson and a Tufts error.

A Fleischer double and Reid single added a run (6-1) for Tufts in the fourth. However, the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to 6-4 in the bottom half of the inning. Pietruszynski walked, Johnson singled and both advanced a base on a ground out. A Tufts error scored both runners. Later in the inning Grayson Bush doubled to center field and Matthew Myers grounded out for another run.

Both teams scored multiple runs in the fifth as well. For Tufts, Noone singled to right field, stole second, advanced to third on a Solomon base hit and then scored on Connor Bowman's single to right-center. A single by Ben Leonard and a sac fly from Evans brought in two more Tufts runs and the Jumbos led 9-4. Randolph-Macon cut the margin by two in the bottom of the fifth with singles by Ethan Iannuzzi and Pietruszynski, a walk to Johnson and a two-run base hit by Brooks Mazey.

Following a scoreless sixth, Tufts built some breathing room with four in the seventh for a 13-6 advantage. Justin Perrotta hit a one-out single to center field and Fleischer sngled to left. An Evans base hit scored Perrotta and an error on the play brought Fleischer around. Reid doubled home Evans and Noone singled in Reid as Tufts polished off a five-hit inning.

That's how the game remained until the hosts scored twice in the ninth. Iannuzzi reached on catcher's interference, Myles Webb singled to shortstop and then Pietruszynski doubled down the left-field line for the first run. Johnson hit a sac fly pulling the Yellow Jackets within five, but Jumbo reliever Steven Landry got the final out for Tufts.

Silas Reed had the win in relief for the Jumbos, going four innings allowing four hits and two runs.

Pietruszynski finished 2 for 2 with two runs and an rbi for Randolph-Macon, while Webb was 2 for 5 with a run. Iannuzzi and Grant Williams scored twice.

Tufts returns home and plays at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday.
