Three-Run First Inning Propels Baseball Over Mass Maritime 7-2

Box Score

BUZZARDS BAY – The Tufts University baseball team scored three runs in the first inning on their way to a 7-2 victory at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior outfielder Miles Reid and sophomore infielder Ozzie Fleischer had multi-hit games for the Jumbos' offense as Reid finished 3 for 4 with a run scored while the leadoff man Fleischer went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Sophomore infielder Patrick Solomon (pictured) also found success at the plate with one hit in three at bats with three rbis for Tufts. Chris Perito went 1 for 3 with an rbi for the Buccaneers as the Jumbos' pitching staff allowed just six hits on the day to six different batters.

The three-run top of the first for Tufts started on a Fleischer walk. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball, eventually scoring when Peter DeMaria reached base on a fielder's choice. Ryan Noone followed that up with a walk and Clay Sowell loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch to bring up Solomon, who hit a two-rbi single to right field, giving them the early 3-0 lead.

Mass Maritime got one back in the bottom half when Zach Sylvia scored from second on two consecutive Tufts balks after singling earlier in the inning. The Buccaneers made it 3-2 in the second on a Perito sacrifice fly to center field to score Frank Aten, who reached base on a double to right field.

The next five innings only saw one run from Tufts in the top of the fifth. Fleischer tripled to right field to start it off and was driven in by a Jimmy Evans sacrifice fly to right field in the following at bat to make it 4-2. Tufts added three more runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined, scoring two in the eighth when Reid singled and crossed the plate on Ben Leonard sacrifice fly, and Connor Flavin scored on a groundout after reaching base on an error. Tufts' Justin Perrotta led off the ninth with a single and eventually scored on a John Fritz rbi groundout. Liam Wilson retired three consecutive Buccaneers batters in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the 7-2 win for the Jumbos.

Connor Kinney started the game for the 'Bos, throwing three innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Tommy Leone took over in the fourth inning and earned the win, pitching one shutout inning and allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Gavin Brown and Jack Chapleski each threw two innings and allowed just one hit each, as Brown finished with one strikeout and Chapleski struck out five, with Wilson finishing it off in the ninth. Michael Estrada was credited with the loss for the Buccaneers, pitching 0.2 innings and allowing three earned runs with one strikeout.

Next, the Jumbos make their return to Huskins Field for their first home game of the 2022 season on Friday, April 1st when they host Colby College at 3 pm.
