MEDFORD - Junior Alex Lemieux broke his own school record in 60-meter dash today at the Tufts National Qualifying Meet held at the Gantcher Center.
Lemieux won the event with a time of 6.84 seconds, lowering his previous school mark of 6.86 from earlier this season. He hopes to have firmed up an NCAA berth in the event with the 6.84, which currently ranks 16th nationally. The top 20 times are likely to get in when NCAA berths are announced tomorrow. Lemieux is solidly in qualifying range in the 200, ranked seventh (21.85).
He was the only Jumbo who helped his national qualifying chances at today's meet, but two others hit PR's and team season-best marks. Jack Taylor (pictured) ran 1:54.71 in the 800 meters, which ranks 43rd nationally. The 14:43.54 put forth by Sam Gatti in the 5,000 meters is #39 in Division III.
In addition to Lemieux, Harry Rienecker-Found in the high jump (6'9" - 2.06m) at #8 and senior captain Ben Stein in the hepthathlon (4664) at #18 have top 20 marks as of 8:30 pm Saturday evening. Luke Botsford in the 400, Drew Svoboda in the long jump and Carter Rosewell in the heptathlon are on the bubble.
The NCAA meet is next Friday and Saturday (Mar. 11-12) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
