LEWISTON, Maine - The Tufts University baseball team (16-3, 4-1 NESCAC) won both games of their doubleheader at Bates College (5-16, 1-4 NESCAC) on Sunday. In the first game, after falling behind 5-1 going into the top of the fifth, the Jumbos scored 15 unanswered runs to start their doubleheader with a resounding 16-5 victory. Tufts continued their scoring streak into the second game of the day, defeating the Bobcats 12-2.
In the top of the first inning of game one, the Jumbos struck first, as a pair of walks drawn by Miles Reid and Ozzie Fleischer and an rbi single by Kyle Cortese allowed Tufts to score the first run of the game. However, fly-outs and a forceout at second left two men on base, bringing up the top of the order for Bates.
In the bottom of the first, Bates answered back, with a two-run single to left field by Bryan Gotti and another rbi single by Kevin Lucey giving the Bobcats a two-run lead going into the second.
The Jumbos failed to score in their next frame, and in the bottom of the 2nd, Bates tacked on two more runs with a single by Tyler Attal and a sac fly by Henry Jamieson, putting the Bobcats up 5-1 against the Jumbos.
Scoring slowed following Bates' strong start, with both teams leaving men on base and not bringing them home in the third and fourth innings.
At the top of the fifth, after a double, a pop up, and a flyout, the Jumbos had two out with Miles Reid on third. Outfielder Jackson Duffy (pictured) smacked the ball through the gap to the left of the infield, allowing Reid to score. Senior Ryan Noone kept the rally alive with a single, and with two men on base, catcher Connor Bowman rocketed the ball to deep left field to tie the ballgame at five runs apiece, his third home run of the season.
After a scoreless frame by Bates, the Jumbo offense roared to life at the top of the sixth inning. After Tufts loaded the bases, Peter DeMaria was hit by a pitch to break the tie, and a subsequent walk by Cortese brought the Jumbo lead up to two. A Duffy two-run single and a Ryan Noone three-run moonshot in consecutive at-bats cracked the game wide open for the Jumbos. The train kept rolling for the Jumbos, as an Ozzie Fleischer rbi single and a pinch hit three-run homer for Connor Flavin would give the Jumbos an 11 run lead that would remain in place for the remainder of the game.
The winning pitcher for the Jumbos was Connor Podeszwa (4-0), who pitched five shutout innings. The losing pitcher for the Bobcats was Jared Pantalony (1-1).
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Jumbos jumped in front early, scoring four runs in the top of the first with a bases loaded double-play allowing Fleischer to score, a Cortese rbi triple, a passed ball that allowed Cortese to come home, and a rbi double by Duffy.
At the top of the third, the Jumbos had another outstanding inning, scoring seven runs off a Noone rbi, a Duffy sac fly, a two-run single by Fleischer, and a towering three-run homer for outfielder Jimmy Evans, giving Tufts an 11-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth, when Bates scored two runs with a Kevin Lucey homer and a Tyler Attall rbi single. Tufts pitcher Jack Schwartz relieved Michael Volgende, who had been pitching quite well up to that point, and shut the door on a Bates rally, retiring the side with two strikeouts and a fielder's choice force out at third. Schwartz turned in three excellent innings on the mound, giving up only one hit and one walk.
Tufts answered back in the top of the 7th with a Miles Reid rbi double that would give the Jumbos their final margin of victory, closing out the doubleheader with a 12-2 victory.
The winning pitcher for the Jumbos was Schwartz (2-0) and the losing pitcher for Bates was Teddie Nelson (0-4).
The Jumbos will continue obn the road on Wednesday at UMass Boston before three games next weekend at Bowdoin. They will return home for a Patriots' Day doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth next Monday.
