BOSTON – The 15th-ranked Tufts University baseball team scored six unanswered runs in the final eight innings Friday night to defeat UMass Boston 6-5 in 10 innings at Monan Park in Boston, Mass.
After a Ben Leonard one-out triple in the 10th inning, Jackson Duffy drove in the game winning run with a sacrifice bunt. Jimmy Evans (pictured) led the Jumbos' offense, finishing 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Miles Reid also found success at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Drew Metzdorf hit a home run in back-to-back innings for the Beacons, finishing 2 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
It was UMass Boston (16-6, 5-0 LEC) that got on the board first, exploding for a four-run first inning. After a Steve Brookwell single, Metzdorf hit a two-run home run to left center to give the Beacons a quick 2-0 lead. The next three batters got on base with two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases for Kevin Carrera, who also walked to score a run. The next batter, Gianni Zarrilli drove in the fourth Beacon run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center. Tufts' Jack Chapleski then struck out two batters to end the frame. The Beacons added one more in the second inning on Metzdorf's second home run, giving UMass Boston the 5-0 lead.
Tufts (17-3, 4-1 NESCAC) got back in the game in the third, putting up four runs of their own. Duffy led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Ozzie Fleischer drove him in on a single to right field and advanced to second on an outfielder's error, eventually scoring on a Miles Reid fly out to left field. Peter DeMaria and Connor Bowman each had RBI doubles to give the Jumbos two more runs and make the score 5-4 in favor of the Beacons heading into the fourth inning.
Neither team recorded a hit until the seventh inning, when the Jumbos tied the game up at five on an RBI single from Reid, scoring Evans who singled in the previous at-bat. UMass Boston got one hit in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not convert it into a run.
The Jumbos did not allow another hit in the remainder of the ball game, going up 6-5 in the top of the 10th inning when Duffy bunted in Leonard after hitting a triple to the triangle in right center field. Silas Reed shut down the Beacons in order in the bottom of the 10th to secure the 6-5 victory for Tufts.
Tufts used nine pitchers in the game, allowing just five combined hits and 12 strikeouts. Reed got the win, pitching the ninth and 10th innings, allowing no hits or runs, and striking out three. Alex Amalfi was credited with the loss for UMass Boston, pitching 1.2 innings with one hit and earned run allowed with three strikeouts. Tufts outhit the Beacons 12-5 in the victory.
The Jumbos will now travel to Bowdoin for the first of a three-game NESCAC series on Friday, April 15 at 3 pm.
