Baseball Falls to Bowdoin 3-2 on Walk-Off Home Run

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Sophomore CJ Brito-Trinidad hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bowdoin College baseball team past the 15th-ranked Jumbos 3-2 in a NESCAC matchup on Friday afternoon.

Brito-Trinidad led the Polar Bears' offense, finishing 3 for 4 with a run scored and an rbi. Peter DeMaria (pictured) had a three-hit game for Tufts, going 3 for 4 with an rbi while Ozzie Fleischer had two hits in five at-bats with a run.

After a Fleischer double to lead off the game, Miles Reid drove him in with an rbi single to give the Jumbos an early 1-0 lead, but Bowdoin (9-13, 2-2 NESCAC) snatched that lead away with a two-run bottom half. Stephen Simoes drove in Ben McKenzie with an rbi single after McKenzie led off the inning with a double to right center and Simoes eventually scored on a Gavin Cann single up the middle to take the 2-1 lead.

The game saw six scoreless innings before Tufts (17-4, 4-2 NESCAC) tied it up at two in the top of the eighth inning. Jimmy Evans hit a double to the left center gap to lead off, and advanced to third on a groundout. In the next at-bat, DeMaria came to the plate and tied the game with an rbi single to score Evans, bringing the game to the ninth with a 2-2 score.

The Jumbos were shut down in the top half of the ninth and after Gavin Brown was able to strikeout the first Bowdoin batter in the bottom of the ninth, Brito-Trinidad ended it in the next at-bat with a blast over the left field fence, giving the Polar Bears the 3-2 victory.

Brown entered the game in the fourth and threw five innings, allowing three hits and one run with six strikeouts. Michael Volgende started the game on the mound for the Jumbos, pitching 3.1 innings with eight hits and two earned runs allowed with four strikeouts. Luke Chessie got the win for Bowdoin after entering the game in the fifth inning and throwing five innings while allowing three hits and an earned run with six strikeouts. Bowdoin also had 11 hits compared to Tufts' 8.

The Jumbos will finish the three-game series with Bowdoin with a double header tomorrow, Saturday April 16 at 12 pm.
