NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior Carter Rosewell of the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team leads the decathlon competition after the first day of events at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on Friday.
In five events, Rosewell totaled 3301 points to lead the competition. He was first among the competitors in the 100-meter dash (11.25 seconds for 806 points), the high jump (1.81m - 5'11 1/4" for 636 points) and the 400 meters (51.75 seconds for 763 points). His 100 and 400 times were career bests, while the high jump tied his PR. The decathlon finishes up on Saturday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 meters.
Jumbo senior co-captain Ben Stein is third in the decathlon (3064), including his 11.73 PR in the 100 meters for 705 points.
Senior Nick Delaney was the runner-up in the 800 meters race with a 1:54.80 mark in a 32-man competition. The Jumbos had three performers score in the long jump - senior co-captain Tommy Bhangdia (6.76m - 22'2 1/4"), sophomore Ryan Vu (6.46m - 21'2 1/2") and junior Amos Trinidad (6.39m - 20'11 3/4"). The marks by Bhangdia and Vu were PR's.
Sophomore Ryan Proulx finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a 9:42.05 time for third place, his PR. Senior Sam Gatti timed 14:43.42 for eighth place in the 5,000 meters, also a PR.
Delaney's 800 and Gatti's 5000 are both in the national top 50 as of Friday evening at 9:30 pm ET.
The Silfen Invitational continues on Saturday. The meet is being scored, but the team point totals were not yet up to date at the time of this release.
