MEDFORD - Pitchers Brendan McFall (pictured) and Connor Kinney both made good starts, while Ryan Noone and Kyle Cortese provided clutch offense as the 15th-ranked Tufts University baseball team swept a doubleheader over UMass Dartmouth 5-2 and 11-5 on Monday at Huskins Field.
McFall went the distance on the hill and Noone had a tie-breaking two-run single in the fifth inning in the first game. Kinney pitched six innings to improve to 3-0 in game two while Cortese homered twice. The Jumbos are now 19-6 while the Corsairs dropped to 11-15.
The Corsairs had taken an early 1-0 lead in the first game, manufacturing a run. Devyn Vezina led off with a walk, took second on a ground out, went to third on a bad pick-off attempt and scored on a single through the left side by Jared Neikam. Tufts would answer with two in the second though. With one out, Noone singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk and a hit-batter loaded the bases, Patrick Solomon singled home a run and Johnny Briody followed with a sac fly to put the Jumbos up 2-1.
UMass Dartmouth evened it up with one in the fifth, sparked by Scott Cromack with one out. He singled through the right side, stole second and scored on a single by DJ Perron. However, right away in the bottom of the fifth frame the Jumbos scored three for the 5-2 lead. Eratic pitching again hurt UMD as they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-batter. Noone singled to score two and then Kyle Cortese doubled to bring home another.
McFall allowed five hits and one run while striking out 10 in his complete game. He did not allow a hit in the final two innings to close out his victory. Noone and Solomon had two hits for the Jumbos.
Andrew Bryant had a hit and a walk for the Corsairs, while Chase Stafford took the pitching loss (4 IP, 4 H, 4R).
Both teams scored big in the second inning of game two. For the Corsairs, Neikam's single started a three-run inning. Another single by Matt Tempone and a hit-batter loaded the bases. Neikam and Tempone would score on a Jumbo error and then Cromack had an rbi single later in the inning. However, Tufts would respond with five runs as Cortese hit a two-run homer, then Ozzie Fleischer had a two-run single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Solomon walked to lead off the Jumbo fourth, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and then scored on Miles Reid's ground ball. That would allow the Jumbos to keep a lead (6-5) as the Corsairs would score twice in the top of the fifth. Cromack and Bryant singled with Cromack scoring on a Jumbo error. Tempone then singled in Bryant.
Tufts would break the game open with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. Reid had a two-run single through the left side, Peter DeMaria singled home a run and Cortese got one up into the wind and it carried out to right for his second home run of the game and fifth of the season.
Kinney allowed nine hits and just one earned run while striking out five in game two. Jimmy Evans and DeMaria joined Cortese with two hits for Tufts, while Solomon scored three times and Fleischer and Cortese (three rbis) scored twice.
Kevin Moszkowicz was the losing pitcher for UMass Dartmouth, allowing five hits and five runs (two earned) in three innings. Cromack, Bryant and Tempone all had two hits for the visitors.
Tufts plays a make-up game at MIT on Wednesday afternoon.
