BEVERLY - Endicott College's Jake Nardone led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by John Mulready giving the Gulls baseball team a 4-3 walk-off victory against Tufts University on Monday afternoon.
Tufts (20-9) had tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the eighth on a home run to right field by Kyle Cortese (pictured). In the Endicott ninth against Jumbo reliever Jack Chapleski, Nardone singled up the middle and then a Jumbo error put runners on first and second with one out. An infield single by Dylan Pacheco loaded the bases and then Mulready hit his sac fly to center to win it.
The Jumbos had scored twice in the top of the second to get a lead against Gulls starter Ian Parent. Cortese was hit by pitch and with one out Ryan Noone doubled to right-center. Connor Podeszwa brought home Cortese with a single, then Noone scored on an Endicott error.
Endicott tied the game with two of their own in the third. Pacheco reached by error, then Mulready doubled him home and scored on a single by Joseph Millar tying the game at 2-2.
Both teams stranded a pair of runners in the middle of the game, Endicott in the bottom of the fifth and Tufts in the top of the sixth after Peter DeMaria and Connor Bowman singled. The Gulls scored to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth as Caleb Shpur walked, advanced to third on an error and scored on a Kyle Graboswki sac fly.
Cortese scored a pair of runs for the Jumbos, while Chapleski (3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER) took the loss. Kinney had a good start giving up just three hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings.
Endicott (27-5) had just five hits, two from Mulready. Max Tarlin earned the win in relief with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Parent allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in his six-inning start.
