Box Score

MEDFORD – Suffolk University scored a combined nine runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up a comeback win over the Tufts University baseball team 12-10 on Wednesday afternoon at Huskins Field.

Suffolk (19-15, 4-8 CCC) sophomore Joe Ward and freshman Harry Painter hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the eighth inning to get the Rams within two runs, and eventually came through in the ninth with a Ward two-rbi single followed by a Painter two-rbi double to take the 12-10 lead. The Jumbos (20-10, 5-6 NESCAC East) had five players with multi-hit games in Kyle Cortese, Peter DeMaria, Jimmy Evans, Connor Bowman and Patrick Solomon. DeMaria finished with three rbis on two singles and a run scored.

Both teams got on the board in the first inning with one run each, as Painter drove in a run on a fielder's choice and DeMaria hit an rbi single to left, scoring Cortese who singled to led off the inning.

The Jumbos exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second, with consecutive singles from Bowman and Solomon to start it off. DeMaria hit a two-rbi single with the bases loaded to break the game open and make it 4-1. The Jumbos batted around the order, giving Bowman and Solomon their second at-bats of the inning, both adding an rbi on a Bowman ground out and Solomon single to take the 7-1 lead going into the third inning. Tufts freshman Ben Leonard (pictured) added a run in the third with his first collegiate home run over the right field fence.

Throughout the next four innings, the Rams outscored Tufts 2-1 with a fifth-inning rbi double from Christian Seariac and a Marc Burbiglia rbi single in the seventh. Jimmy Evans drove in Miles Reid on a single to center in the sixth as the game headed to the eighth with a 10-3 score in favor of the Jumbos.

Suffolk climbed back into the game with five runs in the eighth. Blasé Cormier singled to start it off, reached third base on two wild pitches and scored on a Garret Roberts ground out. Seariac kept the rally going with his second rbi double in the next at- bat, which was followed by Ward and Painter's consecutive home runs to cut the Jumbos' lead to 10-8.

Ward and Painter showed up for the Rams again in the ninth with two outs. After two walks and a single, Ward came to bat with the bases loaded and delivered with a two-rbi single to right field to tie the game and in the following at-bat, Painter gave the Rams their first lead since the top of the first inning with a two-rbi double to right center field.

Suffolk pitcher Steven Rossi shut down the Jumbos in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game at 12-10. Rossi earned the win, pitching the eighth and ninth innings and not allowing a hit or a run with one strikeout. The Rams used six total pitchers in the game compared to the Jumbos' five, as Gavin Brown was credited with the loss throwing one inning and allowing three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout.

The Jumbos return to action tomorrow, Thursday, April 28 as they travel to Bates for a NESCAC East matchup at 3:30 pm.
