LEWISTON, Maine - The Tufts bats exploded for 18 hits and 18 runs and junior pitcher Michael Volgende (pictured) went the distance as the Jumbos finished their NESCAC East Division schedule with an 18-2 victory at Bates College on Thursday.
Senior CF Miles Reid led the offense with a 5 for 6 game with three rbis and two runs scored. The Jumbos (21-10, 6-6 NESCAC East) hit three home runs, by Kyle Cortese, Jimmy Evans and Ryan Noone. Drew Fallon homered for Bates (6-23, 1-8).
This was a 2-1 game in favor of Tufts through five innings. The Jumbos then scored four times in the sixth inning, four more in the seventh and then eight in the eighth to get to their second largest run output of the season.
Evans hit his home run in the top of the second off Bates starter Teddie Nelson to put Tufts ahead 1-0. After the Jumbos went up 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Fallon's home run closed the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning.
An rbi single by Reid and a two-run home run by Noone led the four-run sixth that gave the Jumbos a 6-1 lead. In the seventh, Cortese hit a two-run home run, Peter DeMaria hit an rbi single and Reid had another run-scoring base hit as the Tufts lead ballooned to 10-1. The Jumbos' eight runs in the eighth came on four hits and three Bates errors. After a DeMaria sac fly, Reid had another rbi single and later in the inning Patrick Solomon doubled home a run and Ozzie Fleischer brought in another with an infield single.
Bates scored the game's final run when pinch-hitter Tyler Attal singled and scored on a ground out by Bryan Gotti in the bottom of the ninth.
Volgende improved to 3-0 on the mound for Tufts, allowing six hits and two runs with nine K's. Cortese (6-2-2-2), Ben Leonard (5-3-2-0), DeMaria (5-1-2-2), Evans (4-2-1-1), Noone (4-3-2-3), Connor Bowman (5-2-1-0) and Solomon (4-2-2-1) all had crooked numbers as part of their offensive performance.
After five good innings, Nelson faltered in the sixth and would take the loss for Bates giving up six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. No one in the Bates line-up was on base more than once.
The Jumbos play a home-and-home series versus Brandeis starting Friday in Waltham.
