MEDFORD – The Tufts University baseball team had three two-run home runs and 16 hits on their way to a 12-3 Senior Day victory over Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon.
Nine different Jumbos (23-10, 6-6 NESCAC East) picked up a hit in the game, as Miles Reid led the way with three hits in five at-bats with a run scored and an rbi. Jimmy Evans finished with three rbis and two runs scored, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a two-run home run. Peter DeMaria and Ben Leonard also had two-run home runs for Tufts. The Jumbos' pitchers did not allow a multi-hit game from any Brandeis (17-14, 6-10 UAA) players, but Brian King found success at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a two-rbi single.
Tufts scored in four consecutive innings, crossing the plate 10 times from the third inning through the sixth. Kyle Cortese drove in the first Jumbos run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Clay Sowell who singled to center earlier in the inning. Leonard followed that up with a two-run blast to make it 3-0 going into the fourth inning.
After two walks to start off the top of the fourth, King drove in both runners on a single up the middle for the Judges. Tufts kept their bats alive in the bottom half, scoring four runs to extend their lead to 7-2. Evans started the scoring with a two-run home run, scoring Reid who led off with a single. Senior Nate Bozzella singled through the left side later in the inning to score Ryan Noone and Cortese picked up his second sacrifice fly on the next at-bat.
The Jumbos added two in the fifth and one in the sixth, with an rbi double from Evans and an rbi single from Patrick Solomon in the fifth, followed by a Reid rbi single to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brandeis also put a run on the board in the sixth when Victor Oppenheimer grounded out to second base to score Mike Khoury who led off the inning with a single.
The combination of Connor Podeszwa and Steven Landry shut down the Brandeis lineup in the remaining innings as Podeszwa allowed just two hits and zero earned runs with three strikeouts and Landry closed it out in the ninth with no hits or runs allowed with a strikeout. The Jumbos added two runs to their lead in the eighth with DeMaria's two-run home run and the game ended with a 12-3 score in favor of Tufts.
Senior Tommy Leone (pictured) threw the first two innings for the Jumbos, allowing just two hits and no runs, and striking out two. Brendan McFall took the mound in the third, earning the win with four innings pitched, two hits and three earned runs allowed and two strikeouts.
This game marks the final regular season game for the Jumbos as the NESCAC tournament approaches, starting on May 7th.
