MEDFORD, MA (January 21, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's indoor track and field squad performed very well Saturday afternoon in Gantcher Field House, earning the team victory in the Tufts Branwen Smith-King Invitational. The Jumbos earned 235 points on the day, nearly doubling up the point total of runner-up UMass Dartmouth.
The Jumbos saw
Carter Rosewell start the day by completing the victory in the heptathlon, as he tallied 4,672 points for the weekend. The point total is currently fifth in NCAA Division III, as he finished the event out by dominating the 1000 meter run with a 2:58.71 to pick up 677 points. He also won the 60 meter hurdles and finished third in the pole vault to pick up the win. Teammate
Cole Anderson was seventh in the heptathlon with 3,270 points.
In the 60 meters, sophomore
Luke Botsford went into the finals with the top time of 7.08 in prelims but teammate
Amos Trinidad would earn the victory in the finals with a time of 7.17 for the victory.
Sam Nissen was second with a personal-best time of 7.19 as well. In the 200 meter dash, Nissen was once again solid as his time of 24.22 was a PR and placed him fifth overall.
The Jumbos dominated the 400 meter run with six competitors in the top 10, led by Botsford and his time of 50.85, while first-year
Josh Wilkie was right behind him in third place after running a 51.18. Sophomore
Ethan Forde took fifth place with a time of 51.65, and
Luke Miller was sixth after crossing the line in 52.19. Sophomore
Josh Schwartz led a trio of Jumbos that went 1-2-3 in the 600 meter run, as he recorded a time of 1:26.62 for the victory. First-year
Liam O'Hara was second with a 1:27.21, and sophomore
Jackson Kiefer was third after running a collegiate-best 1:29.18.
In the mile,
Alex Friedman was third after running a 4:33.44 and first-year
Luke Brennan was a runner-up in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:58.74.
The 60 meter hurdles saw Wilkes pick up an individual victory with a time of 8.32 seconds, and junior
Willy White was fourth in the event with an 8.76 in the finals after running an 8.69 in prelims.
In the high jump, sophomore
Harry Rienecker-Found had a strong afternoon, as he posted the fifth-best mark of the 2022-23 NCAA Division III season with a 2.04 meter (6' 8.25") leap. Sophomore teammate
Karsten Kropp also moved into the Top 10 nationally, as he cleared a PR 2.00 meters for second place. Junior
Drew Svoboda was fourth with a mark of 1.90 meters.
The pole vault saw sophomore
Liam Garrison clear 4.00 meters on his second attempt to finish as the runner up. First-year
Sahr Matturi had a very solid day, winning the long jump with a mark of 6.64 meters, and followed that up by taking second in the triple jump after recording a distance of 13.52 meters.
Tufts scored well in the throwing events as well, as sophomore
Louis Tuccio established a new personal-best in the weight throw with a heave of 14.66 meters to earn the victory. Tuccio just nipped teammate
Eric Meyer, who was second with a final distance of 14.64 on his first attempt of the day.
Derek Schmaeling was fourth in the weight throw as well with a 13.90 meter toss.
In the shot put, sophomore
Petey Lemmon was second overall with a toss of 14.60 meters on his final throw of finals while Tuccio was third with a final mark of 13.41 meters. Sophomore
Matthew Carey took sixth after recording a distance of 12.62 meters, and the distance of 12.09 meters by Schmaeling was a personal best.
Tufts will be right back at it next Friday, January 27 at 9 p.m. at the Boston University Thomas Terrier Classic.
