BRIGHTON, MA (January 29, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's indoor track and field squad competed in the Middlebury New England Small College Invitational Sunday, hosted at The TRACK at New Balance just outside Boston.
The Jumbos had some strong performances on the day, posting six Top 50 Division III times or marks. Tufts also had four individual or relay victories on the day, competing primarily against other New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) teams.
First-year
Josh Wilkie continued to have a strong start to his Jumbo career, as he established a big new personal record as he won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.43 seconds. Junior teammate
Willy White was second in the 60 hurdles after running an 8.49. White's time is 50th in NCAA Division III.
In the 4x400 meter relay, Tufts picked up the victory with the 36th best time this year in the country of 3:22.20 thanks to Wilkie,
Alex Lemieux,
Ethan Forde and
Luke Botsford.
In the high jump,
Harry Rienecker-Found tallied another victory as he cleared 1.95 meters on his third height. Sophomore
Karsten Kropp was third in the high jump with a 1.90 meter final height and
Edward Kiboma tied his career-best with a mark of 1.85 meters.
The long jump award saw junior
Drew Svoboda and
Carter Rosewell go 1-2 as Svoboda finished with a mark of 6.72 meters for the win. Rosewell was right behind him with a 6.58 meter jump.
The triple jump had only one competitor for the Jumbos but
Sahr Matturi was very strong, finishing second after posting a mark of 13.49 meters in his sixth and final attempt of the day.
In the 200 meter dash, Lemieux finished as the runner-up after running a 21.99, a season-best time and the 25th best time in NCAA Division III this year. Teammate
Luke Botsford was fourth in the 200 meters as well as his 22.18 was the 50th fastest in the country this year.
Sophomore
Ivan Appleton took fourth with a new personal-best time of 8:28.60 in the 3000 meter run, ranking 50th in the nation after Sunday's competition. Botsford would take fourth place in the 400 meter run as he raced to a time of 49.80, and Lemieux recorded a 50.55 for eighth place.
Junior
Sawyer Wilson ran a 1:55.06 for sixth place in the 800 meters, and first-year
Luke Brennan took fifth in the 5000 meter run after logging a time of 15:13.77.
In the shot put, sophomore
Petey Lemmon finished fourth thanks to a distance of 14.48 meters on his first throw. Sophomore teammate
Louis Tuccio would come in right behind Lemmon with a 14.26 meter toss on his second of six attempts.
Tuccio was sixth in the weight throw, recording a toss of 15.24 meters, and fellow sophomore
Derek Schmaeling booked a heave of 13.86 meters on his third throw to take eighth place.
The Jumbos will be right back at The TRACK at New Balance Thursday and Friday, February 2-3, competing in the NEICAAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
