BOSTON (February 25, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's indoor track and field squad finished strong on Saturday afternoon, rallying to take fourth as a squad at the 2023 New England Indoor Track and Field Championships at The TRACK at New Balance. The Jumbos accumulated 63.50 points for the weekend, finishing behind just MIT (159), Williams College (94) and Amherst College (64).
The highlight of the weekend came in the heptathlon, as
Carter Rosewell took the title with a point total of 4768. It was a career-high point total for the junior, while he also ranks No. 11 in the country after that performance. Rosewell started the day with a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.91 seconds, earning 766 points. He then took third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.85 meters, and finished the day with a 2:57.26 in the 1000 meter run for 691 points.
In the high jump,
Harry Rienecker-Found was second overall after clearing 2.02 meters to pick up eight points. Sophomore
Karsten Kropp was also fifth in the high jump after registering a mark of 1.92 meters, adding 3.5 points to the Tufts ledger. In the 200 meters, sophomore
Luke Botsford logged a time of 21.81 for third place, and junior teammate
Alex Lemieux ran a 22.07 for eighth place.
Botsford was also in the top three in the 400 meter dash, running a 48.96 to pick up six points with a third-place finish.
Marcus Hardy had a strong afternoon for the Jumbos, as he finished fourth in the 600 meter run with a personal-best time of 1:21.65. His time would just nip teammate
Chris Tilton, who ran a PR of 1:21.71 in the 600 to earn fifth place. Cameron McLeod also established a new lifetime best in the 600 after running a 1:23.21.
Sawyer Wilson picked up one point as he ran to a time of 1:53.84, taking eighth place. First-year Will Cusato ran a PR time of 2:30.51 in the 1000 meters, taking seventh place to add to the Jumbos point total, and
Ivan Appleton was 10th in the mile with a new PR of 4:15.14.
First-year
Sahr Matturi was eighth in the triple jump after finishing with a distance of 13.42 meters to grab one point, and
Louis Tuccio was 14th in the shot put with a distance of 13.62 meters.
The jumbo 4x400 meter relay of Botsford,
Ethan Forde, Lemieux and McLeod was third after breaking the school record with a 3:19.56. The time broke a school record of 3:19.82 that had stood since 1994. In the 4x800 meter relay, Cusato,
Evan Ensslin,
Jackson O'Toole and Wilson also finished third after running a 7:53.03.
The Jumbos will host the Tufts National Qualifying Meet next Saturday at 11 a.m. in Gantcher Field House.
