SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's track and field squad traveled out West to Point Loma Nazarene University to take part in the 2023 Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Track Meet in the 2023 outdoor season opener for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos got the afternoon on the run with the 4x100 meter relay, as the quartet of
Alex Lemieux,
Luke Botsford,
Sam Nissen and
Carter Rosewell took fifth place with a time of 41.63. Later in the 1500 meter run,
Quinn Hampson ran a 3:59.43 for 13th place in a strong field, followed by Will Cusato in 15th place after running a 3:59.64.
In the 110 hurdles, first-year
Josh Wilkie finished fifth overall after running a time of 15.27. Cameron McLeod was 10th with a time of 15.89, and Nissen followed in 12th place with a time of 16.06.
Botsford returned to the track to finish with a very strong time in the 400 meters, running a 48.06 for fourth place.
Noah Turner was eighth overall with a 49.85, and
Liam O'Hara took 16th place after running a 50.76.
Ethan Forde also recorded a 51.52 to finish 22nd overall.
In the 100 meter dash, Lemieux ran a 10.95 to finish 12th while Nissen was 15th overall thanks to his time of 11.10 seconds. The 800 meter run was a strong event for the Jumbos, as they had five runners in the top 10.
Sawyer Wilson was fifth after running a 1:54.32, and
Walter Wagude was right behind him with a 1:54.89 for sixth place.
Evan Ensslin ran a 1:55.16 to take seventh,
Marcus Hardy was eighth after running a 1:55.34 and
Chris Tilton took 10th place with a 1:55.92.
Jay Sharma had a strong performance in the 400 hurdles, as he took seventh place with a 55.67, while McLeod was ninth in a time of 56.91. Botsford was third in the 200 meter dash with a very strong time of 21.62, while Turner finished in seventh place after running a 22.16. Nissen was ninth in the 200 meters with a 22.55, and Forde took 14th place with a 22.83.
The 5000 meters had
Ivan Appleton lead the way for the Jumbos after running a 14:43.99, and
Luke Brennan was 14th overall after crossing the line in 14:57.72.
Amokrane Aouchiche also was 20th in the 5K with a 15:09.41.
Tufts was well represented in the 4x400 relay, as the "A" relay of Turner, Lemieux, Tilton and Botsford was third with a time of 3:19.82. The "B" relay was fifth, running a 3:24.79 thanks to the efforts of Wilson, Forde, Hardy and Ensslin.
In the field events,
Martin Decker was 10th in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.25 meters and
Louis Tuccio finished 14th after posting a final mark of 41.23 meters.
Milo Goode had a solid debut in the javelin with a fifth-place finish of 55.78 meters, and
Randy Hamilton also took 12th place with a mark of 48.28 meters.
Karsten Kropp used his momentum from a strong indoor season to start the outdoor season with a solid mark of 1.96 meters for fifth place in the high jump.
Casey Lambert was 14th in the long jump with a mark of 6.27 meters, while
Sahr Matturi finished 15th overall with a final mark of 6.27 meters.
Petey Lemmon led the way for the Jumbos in the shot put with a final mark of 14.09 meters, and Tuccio was right behind him in 11th place after a toss of 13.95 meters. In the pole vault,
Liam Garrison took ninth place with a height of 4.34 meters.
The Jumbos will be right back on the track next Friday, March 24, competing in the Mangrum Invitational at Cal State San Marcos at 11:30 a.m. local time.
