MEDFORD, MA (January 20, 2024) -- Led by individual victories by first-year
Simisola Lawal, senior
Sarah Pillone and junior
Liz Graham, the Tufts University women's track and field squad posted 178.5 points in taking the victory in the 2024 Tufts Branwen Smith-King Invitational, hosted inside Gantcher Field House Saturday afternoon.
In the weight throw, Graham had a career day as the senior thrower finished with a career-best toss of 14.17 to earn the victory. The toss was a New England Regional meet qualifying mark as well. Lawal qualified second in the 60 meter dash preliminaries with an 8.08, but turned it on in the finals to race to a 7.99 for the victory. The time was 0.01 seconds off her season-best, while the victory was her first in the 60 meters as a Jumbo.
Pillone was her usual strong self in the 60 meter hurdles, as she ran a 9.16 after posting a 9.14 in the prelims to earn the victory. Staying on the 60 hurdles, Madelyn Silveira was fourth after racing to a time of 9.93 seconds.
Junior
Annika Kral was third in the 200 meter dash after running a 27.56, and junior
Emma Smith took second in the 600 meters after racing to a 1:39.73.
Antonia Knoth was fourth in the 600 meters with a 1:40.81, and
Anne-Sophie Janssen ran a personal-best 1:41.46 in the 600 meters to take fifth place.
First-year
Samantha Mayer was fifth overall in the 800 meters, recording a 2:34.87 in her first collegiate track meet, and
Lexi Dean led a strong group of three in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:07.17 for second place. Senior
Rose Kitz was third with a 3:10.99, and newcomer
Sonia Olson was seventh in the 1000 after racing to a time of 3:19.10.
Sophomore
Grace Ogden ran a personal-best time in the mile of 5:21.40 for third place, and
Elizabeth Donahue was sixth after running a 5:26.20.
The Jumbos took second in the 4x200 meter relay as Kral, Pillone,
Nyla Thompson and Lawal posted a time of 1:48.42. In the 4x400 meters relay, the Jumbos group of Kral, Knoth,
Julia Dolce and Smith earned the win with a 4:09.33, while Ogden, Donahue, Dean and
Amelia Neiman helped the Jumbos take the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:04.28.
In the jumping events, senior
Harper Meek was third after clearing the bar at 1.61 meters. First-year
Lexi King was also fourth after getting over 1.56 meters, equaling her height from last week.
In the pole vault, first-year
Emma Gall was second with a New England Regional qualifying height of 3.40 meters. Fellow newcomer
Lena Tang was fourth with a leap of 3.10 meters, and
Amelie Wickham also got over 3.10 meters for eighth place. In the long jump, junior
Jordan Andrew took third after recording a leap of 5.06 meters on her second jump of the day, and first-year
Nora Jean-Jacques earned fourth place after recording a mark of 4.93 meters on her sixth and final jump of the day.
Sophomore
Tamia Dubidad earned ninth place in the triple jump to lead the Jumbos, and first-year
Jackie Wells was Tufts' leader in the shot put with a heave of 10.57 meters for fourth place. Fellow first-year
Ceci LaBarge was seventh in the shot put with a toss of 10.16 meters.
As a team, Tufts edged Coast Guard Academy by 36 points, while Connecticut College (77), Brandeis University (62.5) and Smith College (57) rounded out the top five.
Tufts will send some competitors to the John Thomas Terrier Classic Friday, January 26 while the full team will compete at the New England Small College Invitational at The Track at New Balance Sunday, January 28 in Brighton, MA.
