MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 16, 2024) -- The Tufts University men's outdoor track and field squad had a strong finish to its opening meet of the spring, highlighted by victories by
Sami Witta and
Sam Kurian in action from the 2024 Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium Saturday.
Sophomore
Josh Wilkie posted a strong start to his sophomore outdoor campaign, as he finished second overall in the finals of the 110m hurdles as he ran a 14.99 for eight points for the squad. Kurian was a winner in the collegiate 800, as he ran to a time of 1:56.48 for the win. First-year
Ryan Regan also raced to an eighth-place finish with a 1:57.68.
In the collegiate 400 meter run, first-year
Neil Chowdhury raced to a time of 48.83 seconds, taking eighth place. In the collegiate 400m hurdles, sophomore Cameron McLeod ran a very strong time of 56.06 while junior
Jay Sharma started his spring with a stellar 57.44 to take 10th.
In the collegiate 200 meter dash, Chowdhury ran a 22.45 while junior
Naheim Washington crossed the finish line in 22.70 seconds. First-year Charlie Fitzpatrick also ran a 22.81, and sophomore
Sam Nissen posted a time of 22.95 seconds.
In the discus,
Petey Lemmon was the Jumbos' top thrower as he was 12th after a heave of 40.83 meters. Junior
Eric Meyer finished 21st with a 38.62 meter throw, and
Nahom Tsegaye tossed the discus 35.05 meters for 33rd place. Sophomore
Tre Williams also registered a throw of 30.73 meters.
One of the standouts from the day was Witta, as the first-year had a banner start to his outdoor season with a victory in the open high jump. Witta cleared the bar at 1.83 meters, 1.88 meters and 1.93 meters on his first attempt, but would drop out at 1.98 meters to earn the win.
In the 4x100 meter relay, Nissen, Fitzpatrick, Washington and Wilkie ran a 42.97 for 11th place.
The Jumbos will be back in action in two weekends, hosting the Tufts University Snowflake Classic on Dussault Track inside Ellis Oval at 10:00 a.m. in Medford, MA.
