SOMERVILLE, MA (April 20, 2024) -- The Tufts University women's track and field team won seven events on Saturday afternoon at the Tufts Sunshine Classic, rolling to a team victory in action from Ellis Oval. The Jumbos racked up 263 points for the day, besting RPI and it's 161 points for the victory.
Starting on the track, Tufts saw first-year
Simisola Lawal race to a silver medal finish in the 100 meters with a time of 12.81 seconds. Junior
Harper Meek was fourth in the 100 meters with a new PR of 13.08 seconds, and junior
Annika Kral was fifth with a time of 13.10 seconds.
Lawal would also pace the Jumbos in the 200 meters, as she was once again a runner-up after running a personal-best time of 26.06 seconds. Meek was third with a time of 26.30 as she took the bronze medal, while Kral was fourth after crossing the link in 26.52. Sophomore
Anne-Sophie Janssen also earned points in the 200, running a 27.01.
First-year
Kaya West was a winner in the 800 meter run. recording a new PR of 2.22.76 while
Amelia Neiman was the silver medalist with a 2:26.48. In the 1500 meters, junior
Rose Kitz raced to a new personal-best time of 4:50.46, while first-year teammate
Sonia Olson was second across the line with a 4:51.56.
Sophomore
Samantha Fellman was the winner in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:07.09, and first-year
Mia Corso was the bronze medalist in the 10000 meters after running a 42:17.80.
In the 100m hurdles, junior
Antonia Knoth was the runner-up after running a 15.74, and junior Sydney Spivey crossed the line in 17.26 seconds for third place. The Jumbos saw another winner in the 400 meter hurdles, as
Emma Smith ran a new personal-best time of 1:03.84. The time is also 20th fastest in Division III.
Emily Sverak was second with a 1:07.67, and
Paige Zhang set a new PR of 1:13.46 for fifth place.
In the steeplechase,
Taylor Neldner was third with a collegiate-best time of 11:59.48 and
Geri Tabbachino took fifth place with a 13:34.34.
The high jump saw first-year
Lexi King earn the bronze medal after clearing 1.52 meters on her second attempt, and
Emma Gall was the winner in the pole vault with a mark of 3.55 meters. Teammates
Nyla Thompson and
Sarah Firth also cleared the 3.55 meter mark, but had more misses to take second and third place, respectively.
The long jump saw senior
Sarah Pillone take second place with a personal-best mark of 5.43 meters, and junior
Jordan Andrew earned third with a leap of 5.16 meters. First-year
Nora Jean-Jacques also earned points for the Jumbos in fifth place after her jump of 5.06 meters.
Andrew would pick up a victory in the triple jump with a final mark of 11.18 meters, and Pillone was third with a 11.04 meter leap. Junior
Maelynn Ugokwe was fourth with a 11.00 meter mark, and sophomore
Tamia Dubidad finished fifth after her mark of 10.37 meters.
First-year
Jackie Wells was the leader in the shot put for the Jumbos on Saturday, as she set a new outdoor personal-best toss of 10.33 meters for fourth place. First-year
Ceci LaBarge was also eighth overall in the shot put with her mark of 10.05 meters.
Junior
Liz Graham had a great day in the hammer throw, as she earned the silver medal with a final mark of 42.87 meters.
Ravyn Tammiruusu was fifth in the hammer after her 38.44 meter throw, and
Maja Nielsen picked up two points for the Jumbos in seventh place with a mark of 37.63 meters.
Wells was the runner-up in the javelin after her final throw of the day went 30.20 meters, and first-year
Tessa Player recorded a mark of 26.04 meters for eighth place.
The Jumbos will now prepare for the NESCAC Championships next Saturday, April 27, hosting the event inside Ellis Oval in Somerville.
