Jumbos Jump Ahead to Strong Day at Stampede Open

MEDFORD, MA (February 15, 2024) - The Tufts University men's indoor track and field team showed out at the Tufts Stampede Open at the Gantcher Center on Saturday. 

Junior Josh Wilkie began the day with a second place finish in the 60m hurdles. His 8.44 was just 0.01 off of his fastest time this season. Sophomore Sebastian Cohen continued the strong start to the short events by finishing fourth in the 200m dash. He took the spot with a 23.26, just eight hundredths off of his personal best. 

First year Tejus Verma took second in the 400m dash, followed just behind by junior Marten Tropp. Verma's highest career finish set a new personal best with a 51.53, while Tropp took third with a 51.99.

The 600m dash was the most successful event of the day for the Jumbos, with Tufts taking every spot on the podium. Sophomore Ryan Regan finished first with a personal best 1:22.46 ahead of fellow sophomore Sam Kurian in second with a 1:22.68. First year Evan Hankins took third with a 1:23.51, also setting a new personal best. 

Sophomore Harris Gulbransen took third in the 3000m run, marking the only long-distance podium finish for the Jumbos on the day. His 8:40.43 was a personal best, making it the second week in a row with a new personal best for Gulbransen. Luke Brennan finished fourth in the 5000m run with a 15:09.45. 

Tufts finished the day on the track with a win in the 4x400m relay, as the squad of Ryan Regan, Sam Kurian, Cole Anderson and Liam Lucas finished nearly two seconds ahead of runners-up Springfield with a 3:33.77.

On the field, the Jumbos saw continued success. Junior Casey Lambert kicked things off with a third place finish in the long jump with a personal best 6.60m. First year Luke Benson took first place in the triple jump with a 14.04m, 20 centimeters ahead of the competition.

Junior Martin Decker took fourth in the weight throw with a personal best throw of 15.35m. Junior Tre Williams finished the day for the Jumbos by taking third place in the shot put, also setting a personal best with a throw of 13.87m.

Tufts will have the week to prepare for another weekend of indoor action as they head out West to the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday, February 22.
