Coed Sailing Earns At-Large Berth Into College Sailing Team Race Nationals

MEDFORD, MA (April 15, 2025) – The Tufts University coed sailing team received an at-large berth into the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Open Team Race National Championship tonight. This is the fifth straight year that Tufts has qualified for the College Sailing Team Race Nationals.

The five-person national selection committee announced the 10 at-large teams that will join six conference champions for a total of 16 schools competing at the national team race regatta April 24-26. The Championship will be hosted by Brown University out of the Ted Turner Sailing Pavilion at Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston, Rhode Island.

The teams winning conference titles to receive automatic berths into Nationals were College of Charleston, University of Michigan, U.S. Naval Academy, Stanford University, Tulane University and Yale University. Joining Tufts as at-large selections were Boston College, Bowdoin College, Brown, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Roger Williams University and St. Mary's Unversity (Md.).

The National Championship Selection Committee awarded the at-large berths based on team performances throughout the spring season. In the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association – the strongest conference in the nation – Tufts was seventh at the regional Team Race Championship.

Junior Ben Mueller and sophomores Wyatt Bischoff and Kurt Stuebe have been the starting skippers for the Jumbos this season. Senior Adrien Bellanger also started at the O'Keefe Team Race early in the season. Several Jumbos have held crew roles throughout the spring, led by first-year Kate Castleberry, sophomore Cody Lamoreux, senior Naomi Pedersen and senior Cindy Wang. Sophomore Sean Beaver, sophomore Courtland Doyle, senior Nicolas Echarte and sophomore Reddin Kehril have also crewed for the Jumbos.

Tufts was 12th at the ICSA Team Race Open Championship last year, with Mueller starting all 15 races in which the Jumbos raced. Bischoff and Stuebe also made starts at skipper. Wang also had starts at crew. The 2023 Jumbos were 13th at the team race national regatta, with Mueller contributing.

In its history Tufts has won six team racing national titles, but not since 1996.
