Quinn Hampson and sophomore
Luke Benson both won events as the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team got started at the Tufts Spring Invitational at Ellis Oval / Dussault Track on Friday.
Hampson was one of nine Jumbos running in a 1500-meters field that included 47 competitors overall. He won with a 3:53.07 time, shy of his 3:51.84 season-best that currently ranks 12th nationally. Among the other Jumbos, junior
Harris Gulbransen made his outdoor season debut and ran a 3:53.28 time that was third in the race, put him in the national top 30 as of Friday night, and also earned him the #9 spot on the Tufts all-time outdoor list.
Benson won a 13-man triple jump with a best mark of 13.96m (45'9 ¾"), while freshman
Collett Kinobe was the runner-up in the event (13.92m – 45'8").
Freshman
William Cipollone took second place in the javelin throw with a 53.96m (177'0") mark. Like Hampson and Benson, the mark was shy of his season-best that is nationally-ranked. Freshman
Jonas Michael matched his season-best in the pole vault, clearing 4.60m (15'1") for third place at the meet. Leading Tufts in the hammer throw today was senior
Martin Decker with a 48.79m (160'1") for fourth place out of 33 contestants.
The distance races were run at night under the lights at the Oval. Freshman Christopher Hovet led the Jumbos in the 5000 meters, where his 14:56.74 was sixth out of 55 entries and sits just outside the national top 50. Senior
Calvin Cummings ran in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a 10:24.37 time (17th place).
The Tufts Spring Invitational continues on Saturday at Ellis Oval.
