Jack Davis both had a pair of standout performances as the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team competed in a pair of meets in California on Thursday.
A dozen members of the Jumbo team are on the West Coast through Saturday, and began action today at the Pacific Coast Invitational hosted by Long Beach State University and at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University. Both meets feature competitors from Divisions I, II and III.
Wilkie broke the school record in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 14.28 seconds at the Pacific Coast Invitational on Thursday afternoon. The time surpasses the previous school standard of 14.37 held by Josh Etkind since 2017. Eighth out of 30 competitors at the meet, Wilkie surged into the national top 10 as of Thursday afternoon with the mark.
Later in the 400-meter hurdles at Long Beach, Wilkie ran a time of 52.51 seconds that is #4 in the nation as of Thursday evening. Third in the event, it was 0.16 off his PR. Senior Cameron McLeod was also in the 400 hurdles and posted a PR time of 53.55 seconds that is a national top 20 mark and moved him up to #7 on the Tufts list. He placed seventh overall.
Davis ran his season-best mark in the 100-meter dash at the Pacific Coast Invitational. The time of 10.65 seconds gave him sole possession of #3 all-time at Tufts in the event. He placed 24th out of 84 runners. Then in the 200-meter dash near the end of Thursday's action, Davis' time of 21.31 seconds that puts him at #2 all-time at Tufts and moved him into the top 10 nationally. He was 10th out of 63 entries in the event.
In the first 10,000 meters of his career today, junior
Harris Gulbransen ran a 30:12.86 time at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational. The team's season-best mark in the event so far, it ranks him #5 all-time at Tufts and at #22 nationally as of Thursday afternoon. Gulbransen was 23rd out of 65 finishers in the event. Senior
Amokrane Aouchiche was also in the 10K, for the first time this season, and submitted a 31:08.49 time that is the team's second-best mark of the season.
Also in action on Thursday at Long Beach State was senior
Sahr Matturi, junior
Randy Hamilton and freshman
Tieren Mead. Matturi was 11th in the long jump with a 6.79m (22'3 ½") best effort, Hamilton placed 10th in the javelin throw (56.94m – 186'9") and Mead finished 16th with his clearance of 1.86m (6'11/4") in the high jump.
Seven Jumbos will be in action at Azusa Pacific on Friday, while some of the team members who did not make the trip to California start competition at MIT's Sean Collier Invitational.
