NORFOLK, Va. -- The Tufts baseball team finished its spring break trip in style, pounding Virginia Wesleyan 10-2 to bring an 8-2 record home with them to Medford. The eight victories are the most Tufts has earned during their spring break trip since the 2000 season, when they were 8-1.

The Jumbos out-hit the Marlins 17-2 on Saturday, the third time on the trip that they had 17 hits in a game. Nine different Tufts pitchers hurled an inning each to limit the hosts to a pair of singles. Virginia Wesleyan did not put a runner on second base all afternoon.

Junior shortstop David LeResche (St. Louis, MO), who hit .404 and scored 16 runs in 10 games on the trip, led off the game with a double and scored on a single by senior 1B Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA). The Jumbos added two more in the third, with sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI), who led Tufts with 12 RBI on the trip, doubling home a run and scoring. Senior catcher Al Perry (Danvers, MA) hit a two-run double in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.

LeResche hit a two-run double as part of a three-run seventh inning that put the Jumbos ahead 8-0. Junior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) had his second RBI single of the game in the eighth, and Perry knocked in his third run of the game with another single to cap the scoring in the eighth.

Meanwhile, a succession of Tufts pitchers were mowing down Mariners. Tufts allowed only four base-runners in nine-innings. Senior Tom Hill (Robbinsville, NJ), sophomore Jake Crawford (Boise, ID), junior Jack Dilday (Long Beach, CA), freshman Dan Eisenberg (North Andover, MA), freshman Justin Higgins (Stratham, NH), and sophomore Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL) all pitched 1-2-3 innings. Hill was credited with the victory after Tufts came out of the first inning up 1-0.

LeResche finished 2 for 6 with two runs and two RBI, one of five Jumbos to finish with two hits. Junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) finished 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI. Junior RF Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) score two runs during his 2 for 4 day.

Tufts, who has won four in a row, is scheduled to play at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday (Mar. 31) at 3 pm. The Marlins have a game at Salisbury tomorrow beginning at 3 pm.
