SPRINGFIELD -- Junior attacker D.J. Hessler (Monkton,
MD) scored three goals with an assist and sophomore
attacker Sean Kirwan (Boonton Township, NJ) also
netted three goals as #6 Tufts remained undefeated with a
hard-earned 13-10 non-conference victory over Western New England
College Tuesday evening.
The Jumbos improved their record to 10-0, both the best start
and longest winning streak in the 80-year history of Tufts
lacrosse. The Golden Bears drop to 8-5.
Junior midfielder Matt Witko (Chappaqua, NY)
added two goals and an assist for the visitors while sophomore
midfielder Kevin McCormick (Laytonsville, MD)
scored twice. Junior attacker Ryan Molloy (Setauket,
NY) chipped in with a goal and two assists.
Sophomore goalie Steven Foglietta (Oceanside,
NY) finished with 12 saves, seven coming in the opening
period as the teams battled to a 3-3 tie. Western New England
College scored the last three goals of the second period to take a
7-6 lead at the break.
Junior midfielder Mike Santare (South Salem, NY) gave the Golden
Bears its largest lead at 8-6 with his fourth goal of the game just
1:52 into the third stanza. Tufts answered with three straight
goals, including back-to-back scores by Witko that tied the contest
at 8-8 with 5:51 remaining in the period. McCormick then put ahead
for good with a goal at the 3:55 mark.
Junior middie Tom Butterfield-Bragg (Bath, ME)
scored to give the visitors a 10-8 advantage with 2:24 left in the
quarter. WNEC came back pulling within 10-9 when senior attacker
Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) scored with 10:10 left in the game.
Senior midfielder Doug DiSesa (Wynnewood, PA)
answered for Tufts with 6:51 remaining before freshman attacker
Corrigan Harreys (Essex, CT) made it a one-goal game again at the
5:12 mark.
Tufts pulled away in the final four minutes as Hessler notched a
big insurance goal with 4:04 remaining and Kirwan netted the final
goal with 58 seconds left.
Sophomore midfielder Patrick White (Milton, MA) contributed a
goal and two assists for the Golden Bears while junior midfielder
Marty O'Brien (West Springfield, MA) and freshman midfielder Corey
Johnson (Maybrook, NY) each had a goal and assist.
Sophomore goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled 15
saves for the Golden Bears in a nice performance. Sophomore
midfielder Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) won 15 of 27 face-offs
while senior defender Nick Zaleski (Somers, CT) picked-up 11 ground
balls.
Tufts sophomore midfielder Nick Rhoads (McLean,
VA) also compiled 11 ground balls.
Tufts travels to Connecticut College on Saturday for a NESCAC
showdown against the Camels (11-0, 6-0 NESCAC). The Golden Bears
play a Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Saturday at New
England College.
