MEDFORD -- For the third straight season, and for the fourth
time in five years, the Tufts University women's lacrosse team
reached 10 victories in a season with their 16-6 win against
Wheaton College on Thursday afternoon at Bello Field. The Jumbos,
ranked sixth nationally, improved to 10-2 with their ninth
consecutive victory.
Three goals each by senior Emily
Johnson (Yarmouth, ME), sophomore Casey Egan
(Massapequa, NY), and sophomore Lara Kozin
(Suffern, NY) led Tufts. Wheaton (5-9), which lost its
second in a row, got three goals from sophomore Hailey Colburn
(Concord, NH).
After just 28 seconds of play in the first half, the game was
delayed for almost an hour by lightning. When it resumed, Tufts
provided some offensive thunder by scoring on six of their first
seven shots to take an early 6-1 lead. Six different Jumbos scored
the goals, with first year Kerry Eaton's
(Norfolk, MA) putting Tufts up 6-1 at 19:24 of the first
half.
Wheaton sophomore Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA) scored at 11:35,
but the Jumbos scored the final three goals of the first half to
lead 9-2 at intermission. Egan, Kozin, and Johnson all scored twice
in the first 30 minutes for the hosts. Wheaton first year goalie
Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, MA), who entered after Tufts' fourth
goal eight minutes into the game, played well and made seven saves
in the first half.
The game appeared headed towards running time, but the Lyons
came out strong in the second half. They scored three of the first
four goals, including two by Colburn that pulled the visitors
within 10-5 on a free-position shot at 22:08. However, Tufts
dominated the final 20 minutes of the second half, scoring six
times and allowing just one more Wheaton goal. The stretch included
the first career goal by first year Sabrina Gordon
(Lexington, MA).
Tufts finished with a 34-11 advantage in shots, and the Jumbos
caused 15 of Wheaton's 28 turnovers. Senior co-captain Alyssa
Kopp (Hollis, NH) and sophomore Emily
Pillemer (Arlington, MA) both caused three turnovers.
Sophomore Steph Perez
(East Providence, RI) continued to do a little bit of
everything with two goals, three ground balls, and five draw
controls. Senior Jenna Abelli
(Framingham, MA) also scored twice. Tufts goalies did not
make a save in the game.
Junior Tess Meyer (Concord, NH) had a goal and an assist for the
Wheaton offense. Colburn added three draw controls, two caused
turnovers, and two ground balls to her strong game. Hoomis finished
with 12 saves and five ground balls. The Lyons' 15 ground balls
were three shy of Tufts' total.
Tufts returns to NESCAC action at Middlebury on Saturday for a
2:00 pm start. Wheaton hosts a NEWMAC game against Babson in its
regular-season finale on Saturday at 1 pm.
