Junior 3B Sam Sager drove home four runs for the Jumbos

MEDFORD - Tufts University junior righty Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before finishing with a strong 8.2 innings of work in the Jumbo baseball team's 11-1 victory over Daniel Webster College on Thursday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Ryan had faced the minimum number of batters entering the eighth. DWC's Korey LeLievre (Hudson, NH) had walked to lead off the fifth, but was erased by a double play. LeLievre then broke up the no-hitter with an opposite field single to right opening the eighth. After moving around to third on a wild pitch and a fly ball, LeLievre would also break up the shutout by scoring on an infield single by sophomore 2B Elliot Kilgore (Milford, NH).
Ryan recorded all but one out, allowing the two hits and one run with a walk and a hit-batter while striking out nine. He improved to 6-0 on the season. Great defensive plays by senior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) and sophomore 1B Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) had kept the no-no alive. Orlowitz tracked down a gap shot to left-center to end the fourth, and Weikert snared a blistering line drive for the first out in the seventh.
The Tufts offense had seven extra-base hits in the game, including in their first three at bats. Senior SS David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) led off the first with a double and scored on a triple to straight-away center by Orlowitz, who then scored on a double by junior 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) for a 2-0 Jumbo lead.
After two more runs scored in the second, junior catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) homered to lead off the third, and Orlowitz singled home LeResche, who had doubled, in the fourth for a 6-0 Tufts margin.
Collins added a rbi double during a two-run sixth, and Sager brought two more runs home with a double in the seventh as the hosts built an 11-0 advantage.
LeResche finished 3 for 4 with three runs at the top of the Tufts order. Orlowitz (3 for 4, 2 runs, 2 rbi), Sager (2 for 4, 1 run, 4 rbi) and Collins (2 for 5, 2 runs, 2 rbi) also produced a lot of crooked numbers offensively as the Jumbos finished with 14 hits.
DWC sophomore starter Zach Hurley (Hudson, NH) took the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs with three walks and four strikeouts in four innings. Eagles Conner Milliken (Dayville, CT) and Bill McLaughlin (Nashua, NH) both pitched scoreless innings of relief.
The game was played a in crisp 2:05.
Tufts, now 18-5-1, is right back at it tomorrow afternoon at Huskins Field in a 3 pm start against Bentley. Likewise, Daniel Webster plays tomorrow in a 4:30 pm contest at St. Joseph's in Maine.
