MEDFORD - Junior starter Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA) and senior closer Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) combined on a four-hitter as the Tufts baseball team took a 4-1 victory over Division II Bentley University on Friday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Gilchrist went eight innings allowing the four hits and one run while striking out five with one walk and a hit-batter. He improved to 5-1 on the season. Bernstein came on in the ninth for his fifth save, walking a batter in his one inning of work. He remains unscored upon in 18.2 relief innings.
Tufts scored twice in the third to take a lead. Sophomore 2B Billy Collins (Hanson, MA) led off with a single and was bunted to second by freshman catcher Nick Cutsumpas (White Plains, NY). Senior SS David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) drove in Collins with a single. LeResche was balked to second and came around on a single by junior 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI).
Bentley cut the margin in half in the top of the fourth, as junior Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, MA) tripled to deep left field with two outs. He scored on a single by senior RF Chris Hardy (Warwick, RI). That would be the only inning in which Bentley advanced a runner to third base against Jumbo pitching.
Bentley had runners on first and second with no outs in the sixth, including a single by senior 3B Ross Curley (Lexington, MA). However, the Jumbos got a line-drive double play to squash the rally.
Tufts added two insurance runs in the seventh to lead 4-1. Sophomore 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) led off with a walk. Freshman pinch runner Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) stole second and then aggressively took third on a wild pitch. He scored on a long double by Cutsumpas, who later scored on a single by senior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA).
Orlowitz, Sager and Cutumpas each had two hits for Tufts, who finished with eight.
Bentley, who used seven pitchers in the game, got a 1-2-3 fourth inning from sophomore reliever John Yohe (Merrick, NY). Freshman Nathan Witkowski (Melrose, MA) pitched a hitless ninth for the Falcons.
Tufts travels to Wesleyan tomorrow for a pair of non-divisional NESCAC games beginning at 1 pm. Bentley hosts New Haven for a Northeast-10 doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
