MEDFORD - Five Tufts University pitchers held visiting Wesleyan University to four hits and one run as the Jumbo baseball team improved to 20-5-1 overall with a 5-1 victory against the Cardinals in NESCAC non-divisional play Tuesday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Senior SS David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) and senior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) produced at the top of the Tufts order to lead the hosts offensively. LeResche was 2 for 5 with two runs scored, while Orlowitz finished 2 for 5 with two rbi and a run.
Junior SS Kyle Weiss (Niantic, CT) had two hits at the top of the order for Wesleyan, who dropped to 15-15 overall.
The Jumbos scored twice in both the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead against Wesleyan freshman starter Chase Levi (Somers, NY). LeResche singled and scored in both innings and Orlowitz had run-scoring singles in both frames.
Meanwhile, Tufts senior starter Derek Miller (Whitman, MA) allowed one hit with two strikeouts in his two innings of work. Classmate Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA), who was credited with the victory, pitched four innings allowing two hits and striking out five. Jumbo pitching did not walk a batter, as relievers Christian Sbily (Gaithersburg, MD), Dean Lambert (Cross River, NY) and Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) finished off the win.
Levi persevered for Wesleyan and was unscored upon in the third through fifth innings until Tufts pushed its lead to 5-0 in the sixth. Junior 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) hit a one-out single, stole second, went to third on a long fly out and then scored on a infield single by junior catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA). Collins also had two hits.
The Cardinals scored their lone run unearned in the seventh. Senior LF Julian Sonnenfeld (Matawan, NJ) reached second base after an infield error, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior RF Justin Freres (Santa Barbara, CA). Sonnenfeld was the only Wesleyan base runner to advance past second all day.
Levi took the loss for Wesleyan, allowing 10 hits and five runs with four walks and a strikeout in seven innings. Freshman Michael Migiel-Schwartz (Ithaca, NY) pithced a 1-2-3 eighth for the visitors.
The Jumbos host Bowdoin in a NESCAC East series that begins on Friday at 3 pm. Wesleyan is at Eastern Connecticut State University tomorrow for a 6 pm start.
