Wood Leads Jumbo Attack at Western New England in 18-7 Men's Lacrosse Victory

Senior Matt Montgomery scored his first career goal in the game

SPRINGFIELD - Senior Beau Wood tallied five goals with two assists to lead the #6 Tufts men's lacrosse team to an 18-7 win at Western New England in a non-league men's lacrosse game Tuesday afternoon.

The Jumbos (6-1) charged out to an 11-1 lead early in the second quarter to put the game away early. Three goals and two assists by Wood led the way during the run. Junior Chris Schoenhut had three goals and classmate Cole Bailey tallied a goal and three assists to the strong start.

Tufts had a 4-0 lead five minutes into the game with two goals by Schoenhut and a goal with an assist from sophomore John Uppgren. Adam Knapton scored at 9:28 for the Golden Eagles (1-6), but the Jumbos would get the next seven.

Tufts had a 15-4 advantage at hafltime as CJ Higgins scored twice, Garrett Clarke had a goal and a tally by Peter Gill were among Tufts' six second-quarter scores. Knapton and Owen Caruso had their second goal-assist connection for WNE in the period.

After 19 goals were scored in the first half, the pace slowed down in the second half as both teams emptied their benches. Knapton had his third of the game and 14th of the year for Western New England early. The half also included the first career goal by Tufts senior Matt Montgomery.

Despite the lopsided score, Western New England put shots on goal. Jumbo senior Patton Watkins finished with 17 saves in almost 50 minutes of play, including seven in the second period. Brian Droesch played 10:20 and stopped five shots while allowing one goal. Brandon Body finished at 14 saves for the Golden Eagles.

Bailey recorded a goal and four assists overal, while Uppgren added two goals and three assists. Freshman Austin Carbone assisted two goals. Wood added three groundballs and two caused turnovers to his offensive production. Conor Helfrich won 10 face-offs for Tufts.

WNE's David Cedrone won eight of 13 face-offs on the day. Knapton's three goals led the hosts and Caruso finished with a goal and two assists. Defenseman Trevor Scott scooped up five groundballs and caused three turnovers.

Tufts has now outscored five New England opponents 101-45.
