Wesleyan Advances to NESCAC Baseball Championship Final with 3-2 Win Over Tufts

Box Score

MEDFORD - Junior 1B Sam Goodwin-Boyd hit a two-run single as Wesleyan scored three times in the sixth inning, and sophomore Gavin Pittore pitched superb in relief as the Cardinals gained the advantage in the 2014 NESCAC Baseball Championship by defeating host Tufts, 3-2, in the winner's bracket game Saturday afternoon at Huskins Field.

Wesleyan (26-10) moves into the conference tournament final on Sunday at 10 am. They will face either the Jumbos (31-6) or Bates (20-16), who meet today in an elimination game at 3 pm. The Bobcats eliminated Amherst on Saturday morning at Bentley University, 4-2. Wesleyan will have to be defeated twice on Sunday, with an if necessary game to follow shortly after the conclusion of the first game.

Starters Tim Superko for Tufts and Jeff Blout for Wesleyan waged a scoreless battle early in the game today. Superko didn't allow a hit and walked just one in the first five innings. Blout worked out of danger in each of the first four innings as the Jumbos stranded seven runners on base.

Tufts, playing as the visitor on their home field in this conference tournament game, was the first to score with one out in the fifth. Senior 3B Wade Hauser hit a one-out double down the left-field line. Senior 1B Max Freccia followed with another double to right-center and the Jumbos led 1-0.

The Cardinals  got to Superko in the sixth. Freshman catcher Nick Miceli led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and then took third on a wild pitch. He scored on junior 2B Andrew Yin's squeeze bunt single. Junior CF Donnie Cimino followed with a single and the Cardinals then executed a double steal. Goodwin delived both home with his single through the left side putting Wes up 3-1. The three hits in the sixth would be all that the Cardinals would have in the game.

Pittose had relieved Blout after the back-to-back doubles in the Tufts fifth. He retired the first five batters he faced, but Hauser hit a two-out single in the seventh. After Freccia was hit by a pitch, sophomore SS Matt Moser singled up the middle to make it a one-run game at 3-2.

Jumbo freshman LF Oscar Kutch was hit by a pitch and stole second with two outs in the eighth. However, Pittose got a strikeout to end the inning. He then retired Tufts 1-2-3 with two strikeouts to end the game in the ninth.

With the victory, Pittore moves to 6-1 on the season. Blout went 4.1 innings in his start for Wesleyan giving up five hits and one run with three strikeouts and three walks.

Hauser was the only player in the game with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 3 with two runs. Tufts had seven hits overall. Superko took his first loss of the season (4-1), going seven innings allowing three hits, three runs and three walks with seven strikeouts. Junior Willie Archibald pitched a 1-2-3 eighth.
